Propylene Glycol Uses in the Industrial, Oil & Gas and Automotive Industries

Propylene glycol is hygroscopic, non-corrosive, water soluble and colourless, with a low freeze point, low toxicity,low vapour pressure, and mild odour. It has a neutral pH of 7.0 and is completely soluble in water. Due to its low toxicity, it is typically used in applications where safety for the environment is a big concern and the use of ethylene glycol is being discouraged. Propylene glycol has a wide range of uses, such as anti-freeze, de-icing fluid, coolants, solvents, heat-transfer fluids, and as a hydro-testing fluid.

Hydrotesting

Propylene glycol can prove an effective product for hydrotesting applications due to its low freeze point, non-corrosiveness, and other environmental benefits. In hydrotesting, propylene glycol serves as a pressurizing agent with a low freeze point. Pressure trucks pump propylene glycol into pipes and tanks, increasing the pressure to more than 1,000 PSI, if there are no leaks or weaknesses found the vessel passes the hydrotest.Propylene glycol as a hydrotesting fluidcan be supplied in tech grade or as a recycled product depending on the customer’s need. Blends of inhibitor, dye, or water in conventional storage vessels (i.e. bulk, totes, pails, and drums) are easily processed to suit any application. Propylene glycol mixed with water at a 50% concentration has a freeze point of -32°C and a boiling point of 186°C. It can be diluted to any percentage to ensure a lower or higher freeze point, depending onthe application.

Heat Transfer Fluid

Propylene glycol is a widely used antifreeze, heat transfer fluid and cooling agent. It has a low freezing point and the ability to lower the freezing point of water. It provides burst protection and has excellent heat transfer capabilities. Propylene glycol is widely used for making engine coolants due to its low flammability and low mammalian toxicity. Propylene glycol is frequently used as a substitute for ethylene glycol in low toxicity, environmentally friendly automotive antifreeze. Further, its high boiling point and low vapor pressure make it safe and easy to use.

Freeze Conditioning

Apart from an engine coolant, Propylene glycol is also useful for various other purposes. For instance, it is also used as a de-icing agent on runways and roads. It melts the snow quickly without creating a slippery surface.
