For many graphic designers, making mistakes as they go about designing logos and branding materials is a very usual thing. They then learn from mistakes and choose to work on them. Often when attempting to design a logo for a new company many designers and artists make very common mistakes. And more often than not these mistakes happen because of one single thing; lack of communication between client & designer.

Not attempting to know what exactly the client wants or not trying to learn from the feedback & constructive criticism they provide can render you useless. It is very important to be creative, consistent and considerate about what the client needs.

One of the very first thing one should do when making a logo for a new company is to ask your client and understand what exactly it is that they want from you and how they think this addition will benefit the business. One must make sure to keep these questions extremely simple, straight forward and open ended.

The questions you ask should give you an idea of not only what the client’s company is about but also what are its vision & mission, basically what the business stands for. You should also make sure to ask the client where they see the company going and in their journey what things about the company do they want to purposefully show the prospective market. For example it could be anything from the company’s seriousness about the business or its love for CSR.

Secondly, the person designing a logo for a new company needs to be very well aware about exactly who the company caters for. I sit children who would be attracted to a certain scheme of fonts or colors or is it pet owners? A designer needs to know who they are attracting before attempting to create anything. A very well made logo could go to waste if created keeping in mind the wrong market segment.

Next, a designer must ask the company who its rivals are and what they have done with their logos. This is so the logo that they make stands out and shines. Say if there is an abundance of flat blue and white logos in the industry the designer planning to create a logo could put in some gradients that could make the logo and thus the company distinctive in the eyes of the potential customer.

To top it off ask the client what it is that use as a benchmark. What company or person or even logo excites or inspires them. This will help the designer creating the logo for a new company draw on the client’s aspirations and thus delight them.
