Easter is a time where family and friends get together - it’s half term, so everyone is back home for the holidays and the long weekend provides a great excuse for families to get together. When they do reunite, what do they do? I don’t know about you, but chocolate is the main staple of our holidays, it’s the first thing that any member of my family requests when it comes to Easter! However, this got me thinking, why does it just have to be chocolate? There are plenty of exciting options that aren’t cocoa based and for some it simply isn’t an option, so what are the Easter alternatives?

Cake

Baking a cake is a brilliant alternative to chocolate – it’s just eggcellent! I have seen some gorgeous Easter themed cakes online, which come in all different designs including eggs, chicks and bunnies - perfect! You can make cakes in different flavours as well, which means there is something to suit all. If you have little ones in your family, it is also a nice way for you to get the kids involved. Get out the icing and edible cake decorations and let them loose!

Cupcakes & Cakepops

This could be classed as cake, however I have included these separately because I think they work just as well as finger foods or picky bits for throughout the day. I have seen the most adorable cake pops in the shape of little chicks and amazingly decorated mini eggs. Cupcakes also are easy to eat and can come in loads of different flavours with colourful Easter-themed icing! If you are running low on time or have left it to the last minute, you can always buy some from your local supermarket. However, if you have a free afternoon, it can be a really fun activity for the whole family. You could even throw an Easter themed cupcake competition –the best-looking Easter cupcake wins!

Rice Crispy Nests

You’ll probably remember these popping up in school bake sales - little rice crispy nests full of crunchy mini egg goodness. Usually, they consist of chocolate rice crispies and chocolate mini eggs however, in the spirit of finding chocolate free alternatives - normal rice crispies will do! And instead of mini eggs, mini Easter themed biscuits could fit perfectly. Instead of little chick nests, you could even create a rice crispy basket that holds biscuits – if you’re feeling adventurous and eggstra creative.

Biscuits

Just like cakes, biscuits can come in any shape and size – eggspecially eggs, bunnies and chicks! Okay, apologies - I will stop with the puns! Much like the cakes, baking these seasonal biscuits can be a whole family affair – especially if you have little ones. What is also brilliant about Easter biscuits is that you can bake (or buy) in batches, which means they are perfect for big Easter gatherings or parties. Biscuits also tend to be easier to store than cakes, so if kept in right conditions, you’ll have more for longer!

Fruit Salads

I hear you – how can a fruit salad be Easter themed? I asked myself the same thing the other day when my sister mentioned it. After doing a little looking around, I can tell you – people can get super creative! I found this incredible fruit salad idea of a watermelon that takes form of an Easter egg basket. If this seems a little too out of your comfort zone though, you could simply cut up some of your favourite fruits and then arrange them in a delicious Easter designs!

Some members of my family would argue that nothing beats a good chocolate egg. However, sometimes due to allergies and lifestyle changes – it simply isn’t an option. I hope this have given you some non-chocolate Easter alternatives to get creative with!
