Explore Devon’s History and Culture through its Castles

Located in south west of England, Devon is a significant tourism hub in Great Britain. Although not as economically successful in the past as its neighbouring counties, it developed into a booming community (through tourism) when the railway was finally constructed in the 19th century. With a mild climate that attracts tourists throughout the year, fantastic landscapes, and numerous castles to explore, an art heritage trip is a terrific idea for travellers to Devon. Cottages to rent are a popular accommodation option when staying in this quiet county. For first-time tourists who are still building their itinerary, the following castles are a must-see for a genuine trip back to the past.

Buckland Abbey

One of the reasons that make Buckland Abbey so popular is its famous resident, sea captain and politician Sir Francis Drake, who lived in the house for 15 years. When Sir Francis Drake died and the house was sold to a number of owners, many items from his collection were left behind, which can now be seen when visiting the house. Its most notable piece is Drake’s Drum, a snare drum that he used and took with him during his travels all over the world. Apart from being an important historical artefact, Drakes Drum is also symbolic of English folklore. A replica of the drum has been made and can be seen in the Buckland Abbey Education Centre, but the original is a main feature in the abbey’s collection. Tourists staying in Devon cottages nearby may do more than visit Buckland Abbey—they could explore the massive estate and even wear a Tudor costume made by the National Trust Costume Group.

Watermouth Castle

While there is a variety of accommodation in Devon, cottages are one of the most popular, especially for families. Their rustic and laidback aura provides a brilliant base for visiting castles such as the Watermouth Castle. Located in Ilfracombe, the 19th-century building is more of an extravagant country house than a castle. Today, it is home to an extensive collection of Victorian tools, antiques, and machines. Given its vast land area, visitors can also relax in the family theme park within the castle premises, bond over meals in the picnic area, or just roam around the manicured Victorian gardens.

Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle has endured through Wars of the Roses and the Civil War, from which it was terribly damaged. However, the castle was restored in the 1700s but with intricate 15th-century details - from its marble hall, to the staircases and the chimneypiece. Today, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful and important structures in the world and has been featured in movies several times. Nearby Devon, cottages are often let to bridal parties and guests, as Powderham Castle is a favourite venue for wedding receptions.
