Stuck in an elevator
Posted: Feb 18, 2014
I was coming from work half a day earlier one afternoon to spend rest of the day free, and waited for the elevator in the staircase. An old lady from the next door from my flat entered also the staircase and together we took the lift. She was about to ask about my wellbeing and such, when the elevator suddenly stopped between the floors. I saw that she was a bit frightened and I started to look for the instructions and contact number for whoever took care of the elevator. I found it, but realized my mobile had run out of battery and it probably wouldn’t have worked in the elevator anyway. And the old lady from the neighboring flat didn’t have mobile.
Luckily there was an emergency button in the elevator and I started to push that. I heard the alarm outside, and the elevator system obviously was supposed to send an alarms signal to some maintenance company when the alarms button was pushed, but nothing happened. There we were at the elevator, just couple of meter away from home, but still in so difficult situation. There was really nothing we could do than just wait, that someone would hear our alarm outside in the staircase. It was early afternoon, so many people were still at work and it seemed like nobody was home to hear us.
There we were stucked in the elevator. My neighbor lady was around 80 years old, and she moved with the rollator. Her mind was still clever, but the old age definitely had had a bearing on her. When we had waited for an hour or so, she suddenly realized, that she has an safety alarm with her. It was a small gadget attached to her wrist. She pushed the alarm button and the alarm went straight to healthcare center. They would try to call her home, but as she was unable to answer, they would come to check on her right away and we would be saved from our elevator-gone-prison. That's what happened in next half an hour and I got to enjoy my half a day freedom at last.
