That day I got to experience a Bungle Bungle Tour
Posted: May 17, 2017
We got to the airport just as the sun was coming over the horizon, it was a pretty spectacular sight as the ranges in the distance were glowing a deep orange as the morning light spread across them. The birds were in full song and the sky was clear, it was going to be a good day. We met our pilot for the day, James, who told us a bit about our route down to the Bungle Bungle range and the type of Helicopter we were going in, a Bell Jet Ranger. We boarded the helicopter just before 6am and set off quite soon after.
I always find the take off in a helicopter so fascinating and this time was no different and the scenery that we were rising above was so much better than the flights I’d done in the city. We then rose about Kununurra and headed straight for the Ord River. We had such a good view of all the farms that connect up to the Ord River and the main irrigation channel. James was straight into the informative commentary, telling us all about Kununurra and the surrounding areas that we could see. As we followed the Ord River upstream, we got a great view of "Elephant Rock" and I managed to capture a decent photo, the light is great this time of day.
We then reached the Lake Argyle Dam Wall, this was an amazing sight to see such a vast catchment of water that looked more like an ocean rather than a lake. Our Bungle Bungle helicopter tour continued on towards Purnululu National park which was a breathtaking sight as the world-famous range came into view. We flew around the Bungle Bungle Range taking in all it has to offer with James pointing out all the best spots while giving us a good history lesson on the area. We then landed within the ranges to then walk a short distance to what was called "Secret Springs". This place was so amazing, we had the springs all to ourselves with no one else around for miles. We had a refreshing swim here and a beautiful picnic.
Then, it was back on the helicopter for a scenic trip home. We received another stunning view of the Bungle Bungle range as we flew north. Not long after leaving Purnululu National Park, James informed us that we would be approaching the Argyle Diamond Mine, where the famous Pink Diamond is found. Once we circled around the mine and got a good look at the open pit we continued North. On our way home, thanks to James pointing them out and giving us a good view, we saw some awesome Kimberley formations such as the Ragged Ranges, Revolver Falls and the Carr Boyd Ranges, plus many others.
We had such an amazing trip on our Bungle Bungle tour from Kununurra and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
