The database of MS Exchange Server 2010 resides in EDB file that stores the private and public folder data in it. In a storage group, the.edb files take care of the entire database; categorize, and manage it through priv.edb (having user mailboxes) and pub.edb (having shared data) file. The need to extract single mailbox from the database.edb file can arise due to various reasons. For example:
To work around Corruption: If a mailbox or its data is corrupt, then migrating it to another private store can help to retrieve healthy data from it. In such case, in spite of moving entire database to different Server, the better idea is to extract a mailbox and then migrate it.
To investigate an Issue: If a user mailbox or its data is inaccessible, the emailing service is interrupted, or there is some noticeable problem with the mail flow, it could be detected by moving the mailbox to some other store on same or different Server. This will help to analyze what is actually disrupting the communication process or causing data inaccessible.
For Forensic eDiscovery: The major challenge the custodians confront while eDiscovery is the huge size of database. If the required mailboxes are extracted from EDB file, the analysis could become relatively easy.
For Portability of Data: If a user mailbox has to be accessed outside Exchange Server environment, then extracting it and converting it to PST file gives a flexible option for maintaining its portability. Instead of moving or migrating entire database, it is convenient to extract single or desired mailbox from EDB file and then work with it.
So, we see that reasons for extracting user mailbox from the database and then moving to different private store or Server varies. However, the mode for extract mailbox from Exchange EDB 2010 and saving it to PST or another store is absolutely same. Using the Exchange Management Shell Move/Export cmdlets, it is possible that mailboxes from EDB files are exported to another Server or PST file.
Nevertheless, to make this task simpler for users, there are number of third party applications online that help in extracting mailbox from offline or corrupted EDB file with absolute ease and save it to PST file or on some other Server. One very popular name for this task execution is Exchange Recovery software. This tool is known for:
- Its quality to convert EDB file to PST file format where for every mailbox, an individual PST gets created.
- Its ability to export mailboxes from EDB file to different Server (any Exchange Server edition) within an organization.
- Its feature of split PST files by size parameter and gives the opportunity to save emails into EML or MSG file.
