Rome is not well known for its desserts but those with a sweet tooth will not be too disappointed. The ricotta cake, made with fresh ricotta, candied fruits, vanilla, pine nuts and raisins is a classic and makes up for the lack of choice. Ice creams are always available, and the famous stracciatella is named after the Roman egg drop soup.

Where there is food there is wine, and just as the ancient Romans enjoyed the finer things in life, the modern day inhabitants make good use of the rich volcanic soils that surround the city, too. Enjoy the delicious potato dish known as gnocchi alla Romana with the Cesanese wine produced in the south of the region, or for something a little better-known, the Frascati complements fish and cheese wonderfully.
