Explore Some Top Towns In Puglia
Posted: Mar 15, 2014
Puglia is the region that encompasses the "heel" of Italy and, despite its long-suffering history, it is becoming more and more popular to the discerning traveller looking for somewhere different to explore. Now is the time to visit as the delightful region is fast joining the rest of Italy in becoming a top tourist destination. Hotels in Puglia are open to visitors all year round. Whether you want to stay in a city, a small town, or further into the countryside, one of the hotels in Puglia is bound to suit.
Top Towns to Explore
This region is famous for its wild and rugged coastline, beautiful olive groves and whitewashed villages; although the scenery is extremely pretty, it is very different to that of Tuscany or the popular Marche region. With a huge focus on agriculture, much of the land is used for growing vegetables, such as tomatoes, figs, fennel, and artichokes, but there is also a large emphasis placed on olive groves and vineyards too. The region produces excellent red wines and is the country’s biggest producer of olive oil. But although there is a strong rural connection here, there are plenty of delightful local towns to explore too.
Trani
Trani is one of the most stunning of the area's towns, and with its higgledy-piggledy alleyways, pretty palm-lined port, unusual palazzos and piazzas, it makes a great place to while away a few hours. The cathedral in Trani dominates the town and is constructed of the beautiful pale limestone so typical of the area. The tiny castle opposite is also well worth a visit. This is the town to sample some of the region's famous seafood and there are many gorgeous little cafes and restaurants perched right on the seafront.
Ostuni
A visit to Ostuni should definitely be on the agenda when visiting the heel of Italy. Overlooking the sea and wide coastal plain, Ostuni sits proudly on a hilltop ridge. Although there are no iconic landmarks here, the town is a very pleasant place to explore. The winding backstreets take you through the heart of the town and there is something new to look at around every corner.
Fasano
If you can’t decide where to stay in the region, bear in mind that Fasano has some of the best hotels in Puglia. It is a very pretty town, with plenty of quaint churches and great views across the surrounding countryside. Fasano is close to the coast and the modern resorts of Monopoli and Capitolo - the latter boasting a long stretch of golden sand. The best beach is at Torre Canne and if you are looking for a relaxing seaside stroll this is the place for you.
Bari
The capital of the region, Bari, is deservedly so and has a couple of interesting sights to visit. The 11th century Basilica di San Nicola is one of the most important churches of Norman origin here, and the magnificent cathedral has beautifully decorated doorways that reflect the real skills of the Byzantine artists. There are some great little backstreets to explore in the town and, because of the lack of tourists, Bari is the prefect place to indulge in a little local culture too.
No matter which of the hotels in Puglia you stay in, you are bound to have a great time exploring this lesser-known region of one of the most famous European destinations.
