Prepare Yourself For an Experience Hiking In China

Travellers lucky enough to have the opportunity to go hiking in China need no added motivation other than the country’s renowned beauty, history and fascinating culture. Should they, however, want to make sure they are in the correct frame of mind for undertaking such a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, familiarising themselves with the most famous examples of Chinese art, as well as with some western books and films with a Chinese setting, might be a good place to start.

Get in the mood for adventure

Those who would rather read a book than watch the corresponding movie have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to setting the mood prior to an experience hiking in China. A good place to start might be a translation of one of the old Chinese legends, with the legend of the Monkey King, told on Journey To The West, remaining a perennial favourite. The texts and poetry of Confucius and other classical thinkers of the period might also be worth glancing over, as might Sun Tzu’s classic political tome, The Art Of War. The flowery, somewhat old-fashioned style of these legends (and their English translations) may be an obstacle to some, but anyone who is comfortable with that will find these tales a fascinating window into a type of Chinese culture that left remnants to this very day. While guilty of outdated western stereotyping, Hergé’s Tintin and The Blue Lotus might also make for a good choice of reading, particularly for the younger crowd or those seeking something more light-hearted to read before or during their trip.

If, however, you would prefer to watch films rather than read books in preparation for your holiday hiking in China, fear not. Much like with books, there are numerous films you can delve in to that will give you an idea of the history of the country – albeit more or less romanticised. Chinese cinema is renowned for historical war films as well as period action films, with the classical age of the country’s culture always in focus. Visitors looking to understand ancient Chinese culture and values will find a wealth of sources from which to do so. While some suspension of disbelief is, of course, required, works such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, House Of Flying Daggers, The Warlords or the Once Upon In China trilogy do accurately portray certain aspects of feudal times, and just might get you in the right mood for your upcoming trip.

Whatever media you choose to hype you up for your experience hiking in China, however, the most important motivator is always likely to be the idea of that country’s stunning landscapes and fascinating customs. Even if the books and films do not work, that alone is certain to keep you going.
