Have you ever wondered about the flow rate of a gas? What controls the flow of the quantity of a gas or a liquid moving in a pipe? A device called Flow Meter is used for the same purpose. Let’s discuss units of measurements of gas and liquid that can be measured by flow meters.

  • Gases:

Gases are generally measured by carioles mass flow Meters, thermal mass flow Meters, and mass flow controllers. Please note that gases are comprehensible and they change the volume when under pressure. While controlling the flow of a gas, the actual flow rate through the meter is measured in:

  • Acm/h (actual cubic meters per hour)
  • Sm3/sec (standard cubic meters per second)
  • Kscm/h (thousand standard cubic meters per hours)
  • LFM (linear feet per minute)
  • MMSCFD (million standard cubic feet per day)
  • Liquids:

The units of measurement used in controlling the follow of liquid is generally categorized by gallons per minute, Liters per second, bushels per minute.

If the Flow Meter is used to measure the river flow, the measurement is considered under cumecs or acre-feet per day.

Some experts have a condition where they ask if they require a precision flow Meter. Precision Flow Meters are only used to accurately measure the flow control. These meters are generally used in industries like aerospace where the accuracy level required by Flow Meters ranges between 5% to 10%. Though may people might consider Flow Meters as the universal meter for every application, but the accuracy of every procedure is different and therefore, the types of flow Meters used in any industry depends on the accuracy level required by the same.

Talking about that factors that help in deciding the type of low meter required in a procedure, one must follow the following points:

  • What type of gas and liquid needs a flow control?
  • Whether the application requires minimum and maximum flow rates and how much!
  • What is the requirement of accuracy in the application?
  • The temperatures and viscosity of the liquid and gas to be controlled
  • What is the maximum pressure at the location?
  • Whether the pressure drop is a necessary segment in the procedure?

And so on.

Once these queries are resolved, the flow Meters are applied accordingly. Through the classification may differ, but major procedures in a specific industry is incomplete without Flow Meter operations. Since the device helps in controlling the flow of the gas and liquid, one can understand the tension and pressure that can create disasters if the flow is not accurate. The applications may differ, but the resultant subject is highly dependent on the Flow Meter.

One can consider the same applications on the cylinder gas flow attached to the gas stoves in your kitchen. The Flow Meters attached to the cylinder helps in controlling the flow of gas reaching the gas stove. One can imagine a scenario where huge accidents can take place in the absence of such measures. So consider this device wisely, because many lives and procedures are dependent on the same.
