What a Root Canal Treatment Actually Like

A root canal treatment is done with the purpose to save a damaged and infected tooth. The treatment requires a dentist to remove the damaged part of the tooth (the pulp), clean and disinfect the affected area and seal it. The common reasons for the damage of the pulp may range from cracked tooth, deep cavities, failed dental treatment in past and more. A root canal treatment involves cleaning the canals in the tooth’s root

An Overview of the Procedure

You may require a Root canal treatment when an injury or a large cavity damages your tooth’s root resulting in an infection or inflammation. When you visit a Dental Clinic in Jayanagar or anywhere in Bangalore, there are a number of visits that are needed to be made for a root canal treatment.

Firstly, the dentist will take X-rays or examine existing X-rays to detect where the decay is. This would allow them to plan a complete treatment plan that has to be followed.

After diagnosis, the treatment may follow the below procedure in several number of visits depending on the extent of the damage.

  • Local anesthesia is administered to the affected tooth to make the tooth numb. Thus the entire process is painless.
  • The infected tooth is secluded with a rubber dam which protects it from bacteria and saliva during the treatment. This is removed later.
  • An opening is made through the crown of the tooth to the pulp area.
  • The infected, dead pulp is cleaned /removed out of the canals using special files.
  • Canals are reshaped with fine instruments. X-rays can be taken to make sure that the roots are cleaned thoroughly.
  • The canals are then filled with a permanent material. This helps in keeping the canals free of contamination. Root canal filling is usually done with a material called gutta-percha.
  • A temporary filling is placed over the gutta-percha to seal the opening until a permanent crown is placed.
  • After few days, a permanent crown is placed.

The entire root canal treatment will require a few sessions depending on the extent of damage caused to a tooth or a number of teeth. Contrary to the popular belief, a root canal is no more painful than a filling and you must get it done for healthier teeth.
