A Gateway To Diverse Natural Landscapes
Posted: Jun 27, 2017
Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, and a gateway to one of the most diverse countries in the world. Malaysia is one of seventeen countries with ‘mega diverse’ status owing to its important flora and fauna. Subsequently many people travel to Kuala Lumpur en route to experience Malaysia’s natural beauty in its National Parks, rainforests and oceans. Brightsun Travel has cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur so that you can experience Malaysia's raw natural beauty this holiday.
Set in the tropics, Malaysia’s two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (or Malaysian Borneo), house ancient rainforests, magnificent beaches and some of the best diving sites in the world. And just outside the city are world-renowned forest research institutes so that you can experience a slice of the rainforest right at the capital’s doorstep.
Here are our top picks.
Forest Research Institute
Just 16 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur is the serene Forest Research Institute, set up to protect Malaysia’s forests, offering urban visitors the chance to experience beautiful jungle trails just outside the city’s boundaries. Here, smart canopy walkways expose you to mesmerising forests, and you can learn about the importance of the environment in Malaysia and the country’s efforts to conserve forest biodiversity.
Kelabit Highlands
For those who can make it out of urban Malaysia, the remote Sabah and Sarawak states, on the island of Borneo in East Malaysia, contain jungles and rainforests that have sustained people for centuries. In Sarawak you can hike through the Kelabit Highlands, an isolated mountain range in the northernmost part of Sarawak, where forests still exist despite ongoing threats from logging. Here you can take an adventurous jungle trek, away from the crowds.
Kinabalu National Park
On the island of Borneo in East Malaysia you can explore ancient rainforests and jungles. Here, even though under threat from development, you can still experience diverse jungles in National Parks with World Heritage status, including Kinabalu National Park in Sabah. Kinabalu National Park is one of two National Parks in Malaysia with World Heritage status and a must-see outside the country’s cities.
Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve & Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
In Borneo is the world famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve and Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you can see some of Malaysia’s orangutans up close. A crowd pleaser is the orangutan nursery, boasting lively viewing areas, where you can watch young orangutans playing, with a highlight being feeding times. The on site Nature Education Centre and sanctuary walking trails are well worth exploring too.
Gunung Mulu National Park
Gunung Mulu National Park is the second National Park in Malaysia with World Heritage status, and a protected rainforest in Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. Here you will find pristine forests full of waterfalls, caves, valleys, karst formations and mountains. Climb to the top of Gunung Mulu Mountain for spectacular views over the park’s dramatic natural landscapes, and stay overnight for the ultimate ‘back to nature’ experience in Malaysia.
Semporna Archipelago
Sabah has incredible snorkelling and diving sites in the Semporna Archipelago, including the world famous Sipadan Island, an oceanic island surrounded by a dazzling array of tropical fish. The area is known for its oceans that are full of incredible marine life, offering world-class snorkelling and diving experiences. Some argue that the Semporna Archipelago is one of the most stunning dive spots in the whole of Asia.
