To every invention there is a need. The introduction of the DC-DC converters and their utility on a broad sense has made them the backbone of almost every electronic and electrical product. Just imagine a railway cannot haul without the converters.

The DC-DC converters are of million reasons been regarded as the lifeline of the railways as well as the commercial firms. The converters have been able to prove their mettle in these fields and hence, have been promoted to a new level of utilities. Almost all the shops in the manufacturing segment of any production firm make use of the advanced DC-DC converters to continue their production. Railways that have been mobilising the entire people and the goods all over the world are the sensational examples where the railway DC DC converters are used in a broader aspect.

The DC-DC converters have confirmed its place at million of places at million of times. Wherever, the demand for heavy power soars, these are the converters that come forward to fulfil the gap. As far as the railways are concerned, the pantographs act as the link between the high volt overhead wires and the DC-DC converters installed in the section of the train that houses the engine.

Working of Locomotives and Utility of Pantographs

As already said the common connection between the engine room and the overhead wire is the pantograph. It is a mechanical apparatus that is often termed as the current collector. The overhead wire carries a voltage of more than 25k kV from a high source power generation unit. The pantograph is a foldable apparatus that is made to connect with the overhead wire to collect the current. The pantograph collects the power in the form of current and transfers it to the axle brush through a set of transformers that have the primary rectifier as the main functioning unit.

The next series of action is done by the set of inverters. The auxiliary and the primary inverters work together to get the DC conversion to happen. The auxiliary inverter converters the AC to DC and transfers it to the primary inverter. The primary inverter converts the DC to 3-phase AC to move the traction motors.

The auxiliary inverter has also a compressor, a loco cooling fan attached to it with an auxiliary rectifier. A battery is also present that drives the loco cooling fan in order to maintain the engine keep functioning in the best way without getting heated up.

Role of Custom Power Products

Undoubtedly, the technology has shown that the type of modification or the alternation it can do by developing the utility of the DC-DC appliances in the case of railways. The introduction of the concept of the custom power products of the electronic world has been brought forward in order to give the required protection to the consumers of commercial as well as the industrial sectors regarding the quality of the power and in solving the problems faced in the electrical distribution system. It has infused new strength in the commercial DC DC converter.

If the utility of the converters is seen then it can be concluded that these appliances have made the entire humankind and all its inventions fully dependent on themselves. The transport system like the railways would be paralysed without the railway DC DC converters.
