Italians embrace many of the finer things in life, whether it comes to cuisine and art or the simple stroll through bustling public spaces. When looking to experience Sicily, holidays on this island in the Mediterranean off the coast of mainland Italy have a mind-set all their own. Locals embrace the traditions and passion just like any other Italians, but there is a unique spirit to discover as well. People here are rustic, proud and love to welcome guests to sample their wonderfully relaxed mode of life. Even if your visit is very short, when you arrive on Sicily, holidays will never fail to impress. The Most Popular Sites

It's well worth making the effort to see the highlights of this beautiful island so you can get real feel for the overall destination. Admire the great outdoors first with a hike up the Fossa di Vulcano to peek inside the looming crater. Keep the adrenaline pumping at the Scalinata di Santa Maria Del Monte, which is a massive, iconic staircase situated at the top of the village. For some more history and culture, visit the Temple on Concord in Agrigento, preserved from the Doric times centuries ago. The impressive Duomo di Monreale is a cathedral not to be missed for its complex details and charming monastery, and for something a little more unusual, visit the Stanze al Genio - an incredible museum adorned with countless Italian tiles all of different patterns and depicting the colours of Sicily. Holidays to the island can indeed be relaxing, but as you can see there is plenty to see and do!

Discover the Coast

Get ready for some fantastic fun in the sun! If Palermo is your base, visit Mondello for spotless sand and a calm cove of water surrounded by resorts and hotels. Venture west for a calmer and more scenic experience at San Vito Lo Capro, in the district of neighbouring Trapani. If time allows, continue along the coast westward to Cala Rossa, on the most western tip of the island. This rocky area of coast is bleached white, making for dramatic contrast to the deep blue sea below.

Indulge in the Excess

One of the first things travellers need to do upon arriving is make a beeline for a great café as this island offers some of the best culinary wonders in the country. Palermo, for instance, is where one of the main airports is located and it boasts some excellent restaurants. Santandrea is wonderful - with fresh tuna steaks paired with perfectly prepared pasta dishes to be savoured on the outdoor terrace. If you prepare a DIY approach, pick up some to-go items at local markets, like fresh deep-fried pastas and rice balls at I Cuochini.

For those lucky enough to discover the delights of Sicily, holidays mean fun, sun, culture, history and cuisine – in whichever order and proportion you prefer!
