Adventurous souls who have fallen in love with Italy should try their hand at adventure and visit the stunning island of Sicily. Holidays to this part of the country are filled with historical and culinary exploration, but many people visit the area to explore the plethora of volcanoes – both active and dormant. Some are best seen from afar, while others are well worth the trek right to the crater base to feel the heat from lava spews. Along with enjoying all else the island has to offer, indulge in the outdoor wonders of the magnificent volcanoes. Star of the Show

Located outside the town of Catania on the eastern coast is the looming form of Mount Etna. It is actually in the middle of a regional park, without any major roads nearby, so it is best to enlist a guide to reach this massive volcano. Recently there was a minor eruption from the crater that spewed lava into air, but it caused no evacuations. Now that the area has been secured again, visitors are welcome to admire the natural wonder from both near and far, depending on their level of bravery. Many tours begin very early in the morning and include a long, rigorous hike to the top. Tourists are often accompanied by photographers and scientists all wanting to get and "up close and personal" view of this thousands of years old volcano in Sicily. Holidays turn in to adventures if you're brave enough to tackle this beast.

For Hardcore Climbers

Many of the volcanoes on the island can, of course, be viewed sufficiently from their bases, but those active folk may like to head straight for the summit. Obviously, some of the more active ones are difficult to conquer – including the very famous Stromboli volcano. Forever active and always thrilling, this triangular mountain of lava is incredible to view up close. Scientists and enthusiasts from all over the world head to this site for an unforgettable hiking adventure. You can hike right in to the crater with a designated guide, or visit the Sciara del Fuoco vista point for just as dramatic views. The beaches here are also something to see, as many are covered in volcanic black sand.

The Aeolian Islands

Just a short boat ride away is the Aeolian Islands – a must-do when you're spending time in Sicily. Holidays and even short breaks should include this trip on the itinerary. Not only are the beaches and panoramic sea views truly incredible, but many of these landmasses are also home to some impressive volcanoes. (Stromboli is found on this island chain, along with other active craters.) More dormant and scenic spots include Filicudi, Panarea and Lipari, among others. Explore the pebbly beaches, parks and volcanoes on a day trip or a long weekend of fun and discovery.
