The most economical and efficient way to impart color to plastic is addition of Masterbatch during the manufacturing process. Masterbatch is granulated coloring additive that enhances the properties of plastic along with adding magnificent appearance to the surface. It has become a necessity for all plastic industries for processes such as blow molding and injection molding. It is highly beneficial since it disperses easily without leaving any spot.

Constituents Of Masterbatch:

Pigment

Color pigments are added to Masterbatch which further imparts color to plastic. Pigment is of two types. Inorganic color pigment includes titanium dioxide, iron oxide and ultramarine blue. The other type i.e. organic pigment added to masterbatch is phthalocyanine green. It is non-toxic and hence is safe for food safety.

Dispersants

Dispersants are used to add moisture to the pigment surface. They also stabilize the color pigment and also maintain the quality of color pigment on being added to carrier resin. Apart from this, dispersants also help in the dispersion of color pigments in Masterbatch.

Carrier Resin

Carrier resin imparts granular shape to the Masterbatch in solid form. It also adds to the stability of masterbatch in both liquid and solid forms. But, care has to be taken that the carrier resin is compatible with the coloring pigment.

Types Of Masterbatch

Color Masterbatch

It colors different types of plastics and comes in varied forms such as opaque, transparent, translucent, special effects etc. It uses titanium dioxide, pigments and dyes depending on the application and the kind of finishing that is required.

Additive Masterbatch

It provides certain chemical and physical properties to plastics and is used for flame retardants, UV stabilizers, antistatic or anti-block agents. It is of different types such as antiblock, antioxidant, slip and silicone masterbatch.

Filler Masterbatch

It imparts properties such as stiffness, cost reduction and anti-fibrillation to the end product. It contains fillers like chalk.
