When we talk of procuring and managing data, SCADA is a system that is invaluable to any process management. Known to stand for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, it is a generic term that refers to systems which include provisions for accumulating data from different systems or processes and allowing that data to be available for different departments or processes. It can be summarized as a data measurement and management system which can differ in scales and distribution.

Essential features

SCADA system is a generic term as the software can offer different features and capabilities. However, in the general data collection and control of that data is the central point to any such system or software. Not only should the data collection be made conveniently through such a system, but managing that data as well. Application of the collected data occurs in different ways. When a sound setup is obtained by a SCADA system, it usually allows data to be retrieved easily and quickly. There is a supervisory component that is the crux of any such system. This is important as the data collected needs to be controlled and provide access to different functions and processes.

Again, not every data collection and distribution or management system can be called SCADA. That is because there are certain hardware components that are common in such a system. For instance, a database is built in the backdrop of such a software along with search functions and store capabilities. There is a programmable logic controller component that can assimilate as well as classify the data that is collected. There is a network set up for the SCADA system to allow remote and local terminal units to access such data. Hence, a central repository is usually created for such a software. It becomes the central control point which allows monitoring of the data. It also provides remote access to the data that is stored. There is a human and machine interface that is inbuilt in such a system. This interface offers greater control of the data collection and flow of data. For instance, if required, automatic functions can be intervened. For such changes administrative access is provided and only individuals with proper credentials can access and make such changes.

A SCADA system usually comprises of a master station that has servers housing the main software and allows the data to be available for remote access. This allows transfer and flow of data as well. The SCADA system would have a master station with interconnecting systems that might be linked within an office premise or with field stations located remotely.

If you are looking to set up a SCADA system for your office, it would be wise to look up different vendors who offer such software. Depending on the nature of operations or data to be handled, such a system or software would differ. Again, different features and connectivity options are also inbuilt in such systems. It is possible to review such systems and choose a vendor whose solution seems most appropriate for one’s business.

Sielco Sistemi takes pride in offering SCADA Software Winlog Pro, the software solution for most industrial applications today.
