Islam is one of the major religion in the world and stands in second place with the 1.3 Billion followers across the globe. The followers of Islam are divided into three denomination as Sunni, Shia, and Al-Ibadhiyyah and Sufism.

Sunni- Largest Denomination

The largest denomination or school of thought in the religion of Islam have Sunni Muslims. The world Sunni given to a specific group of Muslims is due to the fact that they follow Sunnah. Sunnah is a series of acts, teaching and sayings of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) during his life. So the Muslim community who follows the teaching of Hazrat Muhammad is termed as Sunni as they live their life according to it.

Shia- Second Largest Denomination

The second denomination that belongs to the school of thought in the religion of Islam is Shia community. The Muslims belonging to this community constitute of 10 -15% of the total Muslim population and the majority is residing in Iraq, Iran and other Middle Eastern countries such as Lebanon. The presence of this school is due to the conflict of belief between these two communities.

According to Sunni belief, the right successor after the Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is HazratAbukar and then Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abu Talib which are also referred as the Rashidun Caliph. According to Shia belief, the right successor of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is Ali ibn Abu Talib which was Hazrat Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law. Due to this fact, Shia community also disregards the first three caliph and thinks that spiritual and political authority over the community should be given to the bloodline of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Al-Ibadhiyyah and Sufism- Less traditional school of thought

This school of thought is more common in Oman and can be found further in North African countries that include Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Many believe that this school of thought has arrived in the religion of Islam through the pre-existing Islamic school of thought which is called Khawarji but this fact is denied by the people belonging to this.

Secondly, Sufism is the school of thought that is connected with the mystical and spiritual side of Islam. The people following the Sufism is called Sufis as they strive for perfection of worship as stated in Hadith and they also call Hazrat Muhammad the perfect person, leader and ultimate guide for the life. Despite the different schools of thought, all Muslims have strong faith in the Five Pillars of the Islam and this faith is not affected by the community or school of thought they belong.
