The rich cultural history of India has fascinated tourists and locals alike. The historical monuments spread across the length & breadth of the country is a symbol & reminder of the rich cultural history of this land. Also called the ‘Black Pagoda’, a name given by sailors so as to distinguish it from the white Puri temples, Sun Temple at Konark was built in 13th century under the reign of King Narasimha Dev. The temple is dedicated to the Sun God Surya. Though mostly in ruins now, it is still hailed as a work of architectural geniuses of that period. The shrine of the presiding deity is also largely in ruins.
The mention of this beautiful temple is found in Ain-i-Akbari which was written by Abul Fazl, Akbar's official historian. The historian is believed to have seen the temple when it was at the heights of its glory and was completely spellbound by its beauty and grandeur.
One of the holy Shiva Peeths spread across India; Lingaraja Temple is actually a cluster of 65 temples which surrounds the central structure. A symbol of the glory of Kalinga architecture, this temple is believed to have been built in the 11 century. This temple is a sign of architectural brilliance of that period.
Of all the secondary temples, a temple dedicated to the Goddess Parvati holds a place of prominence. The temple entrance is guarded by two lions & within the temple walls, one can come across the beautiful sculptures of royal men and women, peasants, courtesans, musicians, etc. – all of which stand testimony to the artistic genius of the craftsmen and sculptors of the period.
This architecture of this beautiful monument is a blend of three kinds - Turkish, Egyptian and Syrian. It was built to commemorate Sir David Ochterlony's victory in the Nepal war (1814-1816). The view from the top of this monument is spectacular, though special permission is required to ascend to the top. Renamed Shaheed Minar in 1969, this monumemt has come to symbolize the bravery and sacrifice of all Indian soldiers who fought for India’s freedom.
