Hiking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a holiday in sunny Tenerife, but if incredible scenery, beautiful wildlife and a bit of adventure appeals to you, then there’s no better place to test your legs. We’ve sourced the three most breathtaking trails and the best resorts in Tenerife to let you immerse yourself in this natural paradise.

Give Yourself an Easy Start

If you’re not the most avid or experienced of hikers, no fear – the town of Costa Adeje on the southern coast of the island is perfect for those who aren’t quite ready to throw themselves in at the deep end. There are a number of easier paths to choose from as well as several organised walking tours, and all come with spectacular views of the coast.

The Geranium Walk is particularly popular, though it does require some of that energy you’ll have built up on the amateur paths – it spans 10km, passing the Playa de las Americas where you can take a handy dip in the ocean to cool yourself down.

For the perfect spot to relax after your adventures, the Bahia del Duque Resort is one of the most exquisite resorts in Tenerife. It’s a spectacular hotel right on the beach with five outdoor pools, private balconies, gorgeous gardens and a multitude of bars and restaurants. You’ll forget about your sore feet in no time!

Set Yourself a Challenge

If you’re ready to test yourself on a more demanding trail, the Paisaje Lunar (or Lunar Landscape Route) is a challenging eight-mile trek up hills and through woodland. It’s hard, but well worth it for the sights which include the fantastic mountains and the glittering ocean beneath. Taking five hours, the route makes for a great day out.

The surrounding town of Vilaflor is also an absolute gem, nestled 1,500 metres above sea level and offering a wealth of beautiful hiking trails in all directions. To reward yourself after a day’s hike, try some of Tenerife’s most celebrated gastronomy in one of the delightful restaurants dotted around the town.

Reach New Heights

There’s no way a hiking holiday in Tenerife would be complete without a trip to the famous Teide National Park. As its crowning glory, Mount Teide towers over everything as Spain’s highest mountain; just as impressive is Pico Viejo, the second highest volcano in the Canaries.

If you want a hike with a difference, try the climb up Mount Teide and enjoy the flourishing scenery whilst being led by an experienced and friendly guide. The view from the top (an amazing 3,555 metres high) is one that you won’t ever forget.

Whether you choose to explore Vilaflor or Teide (or both!), a great base is the Spa Villalba, with its comfortable rooms, a spa and swimming pools to really unwind after a long day. You can also take advantage of Prestige’s car hire service to get you to the National Park, and indulge in some wine tasting with the hotel’s tour of the nearby Reverón wine cellar.
