PRINCE2 is based on the following seven principles, which is the foundation upon which everything else in the framework is based. Those who obtain PRINCE2 training will be taught the importance of the following-

  1. Continued business justification

This means that there should be a justifiable reason to start a project, and that this reason remains valid throughout the life of the project and the justification is documented and approved. This justification is documented in the Business Case, driving decision making and making sure that the project stays true to its business objectives and benefits.

  2. Learn from experience

Teams using PRINCE2 are expected to learn from past experience. The lessons learnt are sought, recorded and acted upon throughout the project life cycle. Lessons learnt from past projects are also applied in order to learn from others and improve the way that projects are carried out.

These lessons are documented in the Lessons Log and become the contents of the Lessons Report which is created by the Project Manager at the end of each stage and at the end of the project.

  3. Defined roles and responsibilities

PRINCE2 projects have defined and approved roles and responsibilities that engage all aspects of the involved internal or external organisations, which consist of the business, user and supplier. The interest of all the stakeholders must be represented in the project management team in order for the project to be successful.

  4. Manage by stages

Projects are planned in management stages that create control points throughout the project. This allows projects to be monitored and controlled on a stage-by-stage basis, with a review at the end of the management stage.

  5. Manage by excellence

PRINCE2 projects define tolerances for time, cost, quality, scope, risk and benefits to establish limits of delegated authority across all levels of management. This allows for accountability and helps with decision making.

  6. Focus on products

The focus is on defining and delivering products that meet their stated quality criteria. This includes the final product of the project as well as other significant products produced across the life of the project.

  7. Tailored to suit the project environment

PRINCE2 should be tailored to work for the project’s environment, size, complexity, importance, capabilities and risks.

  8. Enrolling in PRINCE2 courses will give you a more detailed understanding of these seven principles and allow you to conduct a project based upon them.
