Microsoft Visual Studio is one of the most widely used developing tools in the world and you are able to mod your Minecraft directly through the software. The move that happened back in 2015 made things much easier and allowed minecrafters a host of new options available in the Microsoft Visual Studio platform in a world where the only limit is your creativity.

The best thing about the option is that it is completely free and you can make it happen instantaneously if you already have Visual Studio installed. You just need to navigate to the specific page on the Microsoft Visual Studio Extension gallery and there you will find amidst others a new option called Minecraft Mod Developer Pack.

You can download it within seconds then you are good to go. Not only that the developer pack is free, you can download the open-source code from Microsoft’s GitHub page. So apart from tinkering in Minecraft with the help of the code you can alter the code so it works even better for you. It is a rare display of open-source approach from Microsoft which is famous for its closed systems.

Now why this highly anticipated move was delayed for so long till 2015 to make it happen? It turns out Microsoft was waiting for the acquisition of Mojang to diversify its modding options with the help of the Minecraft Mod Developer Pak.

After the acquisition was made, Microsoft released the new Visual Studio modding option and kept it open in spirit with Minecraft itself. It was also widely reported that the acquisition team from Microsoft that negotiated with Mojang was a collection of serious Minecrafters and thus they immediately wanted to give the players in Minecraft a real platform from which they can mod the game to their heart’s content. They knew the struggles of modding with the contemporary modding options and thus their strategic position bore fruit very quickly after closing out the Mojang deal.

The first news of the modding developer pack in Visual Studio was broken at one of Microsoft’s local hackathons. The Microsoft team announced the new extension and showed it to vociferous applause. Well, minecrafters are everywhere! Soon enough, they made it available for all and there was no need for an upgrade or anything else.

Even though it has been 2 years since the launch they team is still busy fixing bugs and coming up with new updates to make the visual studio modding pack’s performance seamless as possible. You can also submit your own bugs and issues by sharing your experience with Microsoft GitHub.

So, what next? Complete open-source Minecraft so we can build and play Mario? Well, lets not get ahead of ourselves!
