- Commitment to getting fit is essential, combined with willpower the strength to endure will come. It may hurt, but the result is worth it.
- Set a goal you can reach. If you want to get fit so that you can win races you need to break it down into a series of manageable tasks. Henry Ford said, "Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs." Make it something you can reasonably reach. Maybe it’s a jump technique that you find difficult, practice the jump in stages, one week try landings, the next week tries different approaches and so on until you’ve got it.
3. Build up gradually. Every week you will be further ahead than the week before. Tell yourself that your closer to perfection than you were last week. Henry Ford was a great innovator and said: "There isn't a person anywhere that isn't capable of doing besides than he thinks he can." If you divide it up into small tasks, you will eventually get fit enough to succeed in downhill racing.

Beat the boredom factor
- Variety is the spice of life. Vary your health routine so that you don’t get bored.
- Take a break. Have a day off at least once a week to give your mind and body something else to think about. Do something different, you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make you your get fit routine, you’ll come back the next day full of energy and enthusiasm.
- Pace yourself. If you are regularly training at full speed, you will get tired and lose motivation. Remember the Hare and the Tortoise; it was the Tortoise who went at a steady rate and won the race.
- Two’s company. It’s more fun to get fit with a friend. If you know that someone is expecting you to turn up you’re much more likely to go, so you don’t let them down. They will encourage you when you hit a wrong spot, and you can help them through their tough times.
- Visualise accomplishment. Our friend Henry Ford also said, "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right." To stay motivated enough to get fit you need to practice the conclusion you want to achieve mentally.
- Learn from your mistakes. Although it doesn’t feel right at the time, it’s surprising how much you can learn from losing. It forces you to examine yourself and study ways to improve.
- Whoop it up when you have a small success. Give yourself a treat when you have passed a milestone on the road to getting fit.
- Be your critic. You are the best judge of your performance. If you win your race, did you do the absolutely the best you could or were there areas you can improve on?

- Be honest. If you are happening short of your intentions, explain why. If you are not entirely truthful with yourself about your fitness training, you won’t make the progress you want.
- Be happy. If you experience what you’re doing, you will want to keep practicing. If you keep working at it, then you’ll get fit.
- Be patient. If something is deserving doing, then it’s worth spending time and effort to do it. Getting healthy is a long-term project, and you can’t expect to do it overnight.
- Be sensible about your diet and make sure you maintain your fluid levels. Excellent performance requires understanding the requirements of your body.

- Be flexible. When you review your progress or reach a goal that you’ve set move on. Change your goal, contact for an another objective, build on what you’ve achieved already.
- Be specific. If you don’t know what you’re aiming for you can’t achieve your goals. Decide on a precise objective and write it on the calendar, such as competing in a race in six weeks time.
- Be realistic. Don’t give up just because you’ve screwed up a few times. Arnold Palmer once said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
