Nepal is one of the best places in the world to trek in the mountains. Here we take you through 3 of the country’s best routes, including easy week long treks from the heart of the capital city. Brightsun Travel has some of the lowest airfares to Nepal around, so that you can experience these spectacular mountain routes for yourself this holiday.

Everest

Nepal has been attracting climbers since the 1920s, many aspiring to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest peak in the world. Certainly one of Nepal’s most popular trekking routes is the Everest Base Camp trek. On this trek, the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla alone is an attraction in itself, where you can catch a glimpse of Everest right from your window. The Everest Base Camp trek is achievable for most people, and attracts thousands of visitors a year, for its breathtaking scenery and impressive hiking routes where you can stay at traditional Nepalese teahouses.

Annapurna

Fly into Pokhara, Nepal’s third largest city, and, before embarking on your trek, you could visit the International Mountain Museum and explore the history and culture of the Himalayas. The Annapurna Circuit trek takes about 2 weeks in total from Pokhara. The trek offers spectacular scenery, where you will hike through rhododendron forests, remote mountain communities, and past breathtaking natural waterfalls. Eventually you will reach stunning mountain wildernesses, where you can bathe in natural hot springs, and gaze at one of the highest mountains in the world.

Langtang

The Langtang trek is a week long excursion from Kathmandu, and is one of Nepal’s most accessible trekking routes. Because it doesn’t have the headliner mountain ranges, the route is less popular than Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, so you can enjoy a relatively uncrowded experience. During the week long trek you will pass through rhododendron forests, plus valleys and ridges where Yaks graze right next to trekking paths. Here you can stay at traditional Nepalese teahouses (that largely haven’t been adapted for tourism), and wake up to snow capped landscapes that will leave you speechless.

Advice

Before you set out on your adventures there are lots of questions to be answered. Do I go alone or employ a local guide? What do I take? Where do I stay? How do I avoid altitude sickness? Will I need to learn a local language? What do I do with all my litter? How can I give back to the communities I visit? All these questions and more can be answered at the Kathmandu Environmental Education Centre (KEEP), in the tourist centre of Thamel in Kathmandu. Here you can stock up on trekking equipment and get expert advice about making the most of the country’s amazing trekking routes.

When to go

The best times to go trekking in Nepal are just after the monsoon when the air is clear and temperatures are mild, in September through to November. Another popular time is between March to May, before the monsoon begins and temperatures soar. Alternatively, go in December and experience low season and low temperatures.
