In our classes, we begin our learning about computers with Input and Output Devices, the two basic categories of computer hardware. However, as our understanding of the system betters and the level of interaction with this advanced machine rises, we require multiple other devices that are collectively termed as Computer Peripheral Devices. These devices have been specifically designed and developed to expand the set of functions that a computer system can support thus keeping pace with the growing demands of this progressing world. The following section enlists a few Peripherals and the function they perform.

Keyboard: Computer keyboard is an input device and falls in the category of peripherals. It comprises of flat-bedded arrangement of keys that are used to enter numbers, letters, characters and commands into the computer system.

Computer Mouse: Today, it will be hard for many of us to believe that mouse is not an integral part of a computer system, it is just a peripheral devise; however that is the truth. It is one of the most commonly used input devises, which feeds command into the computer by pointing and selecting items on the screen. This Graphical User Interface makes it very easy and quick to work with computers.

Secondary Storage Devices: There is a wide range of secondary storage devices with varying storage capacity available in the market today. Hard disks are metallic platters with huge storage limits and serve an important role in performance enhancement of the system. They are classified into internal hard disk, hard disk cartridges and hard disk packs. Other secondary storage devices include optical disks, memory cards, compact disks, magnetic tapes, etc.

Other Computer Peripherals

As already mentioned, the list of Computer Peripheral Devices is a long one. Webcams, digital cameras, image scanners, graphic cards, microphones, etc too form the part of this list. Devices like Random Access Memory (RAM) are blurring the line between peripherals and the primary component. Although not an integral part of the system but if removed, this may lead to virtually a disabled computer.
