Posted: Aug 22, 2017
When it comes to being disabled, feeling sorry for yourself isn’t going to help. You can stay in one corner of the room feeling sorry for yourself, or you can conquer everything that people said you can’t do. One minute you are a perfectly healthy individual, the next moment you are afflicted with a disabling disease. Imagine being healthy one day and being afflicted by ALS a debilitating disease that prevents you from moving your muscles.
Being a strong, independent individual:
Certainly, you don’t want others to baby you, given that you have this disease that will prevent you from moving around. It’s not surprising that you will come to rely on other people for your day to day tasks. Imagine living a life where you don’t have to rely on anyone given your disability. When someone knocks on your door, you have to crawl on your knees and get to the door, as you cannot use your feet. The medication bill can be so high that you cannot afford medication, making your condition worse. To make matters worse, you lose your job and can no longer afford food, so you have to live on drinking milk. Due to malnourishment, you have end up losing 30 pound, and your health is going downhill every day.
Going to the bathroom:
Instead of relying on others to take you to the bathroom, you have to crawl all the way, getting in contact with the unhygienic bathroom floor. Imagine trying to sit on the toilet seat, its hard labor and often times you end up slipping and hurting yourself. Often times, you have deal with touching the unhygienic floor and risk getting an infection – but that is life you have now. The only other option you have is death itself.
Going down the stairs:
In order to go down the stairs, you need use your crutches, the stairs are very steep and often times you have slipped and broken a few bones, so going outside the home is certainly an occasion that are absolutely necessary to attend. Given that you don’t have a wheelchair, it can be hard to get around.
Going to the doctor for a routine checkup:
Once again, going to the doctor is necessary if you want to maintain your health. However, given that you are disabled from the neck down, how do you get around – as you can no longer drive, and theirs is no one there to drive you to the doctor. It’s quite sad, but there are millions of disabled Americans who don’t have any to care for them.
