Some family caregivers are not at home all day to look after their loved ones. However you can ensure your loved one`s safety by making some changes in your house which can make it safer for them to spend their day without an outside help. Here the list of 6 ways you can make your house a safer environment for your senior loved one to live in.

1. Putting an Alarm System

An alarm system has panic buttons, a burglar alarm, and an emergency phone which can ensure your contact with your loved one in any case. Placing an alarm system can also make it easier for your loved one to feel safer and sleep calmly knowing the house is monitored and prevented from any discomforts.

Few seniors may have problems while climbing the stairs with polished surfaces or placing their foot on runners which may make them skid or fall. You can remove runners from the stairs and tighten railings for your loved ones to climb down the stairs comfortably and without any hassle. You can also install wooden stairs, ramps or a stair lift for your loved one if he or she has limited mobility.

Family caregivers can put phones beside their loved one`s bed to call if they face problems in getting off the bed or for any other disturbance. Your loved one`s bed should be at a comfortable level for him or her to climb and the mattress should be firm to get off easily. You can also put lamps besides your loved one`s bed in case he or she wakes up in the middle of the night and wanted to use the bathroom. You can also put side railings all around the bed for your loved one`s assistance in getting off or move around the bed safer.

4. Automatic Lightings

Your loved ones can get the better of automatic lightings in every room if they have weaker eye sight. Family caregivers can install automated lighting system which may help your loved ones greatly in managing things and have better access in turning on and off the lights. You can put flashlights or battery powered lighting in case of power outrages which can make difficulties for your loved one to move around the house.

5. Making Bathroom Safer

One of the most common places where seniors may fall or skid is a bathroom as it is slippery. You can put side bars in the bath tub for your loved ones to enhance handling and they can have a firm hold while taking a bath. Put shower seats for your loved one to sit in the shower if they feel tired or have limited mobility. Put a cordless phone in the bathroom for your loved one to make emergency calls.

6. Preventing a Fire

Put fire extinguishers in different places for your loved one in case of small fires and make it accessible. Smoke detectors should be placed in every room of the house t prevent fire if your loved one have weak hearing. You can also connect the alarming system with the smoke detectors as it can alert the fire department.
