Is It a Sleeper Bed or a Sofa? How ‘Bout Both!

An Historical Perspective

Sleeper beds or sofa beds are paradoxical by their nature. They can’t seem to make up their minds whether to be a bed for sleeping or a couch for lounging, so you might say they suffer from an identity crisis like many teenagers. What we think of as a sofa bed was invented around the turn of the twentieth century. Early versions were rather primitive, and in the decades to follow, later versions would become bulky and heavy, making them inconvenient to open and close and a major chore to move or relocate. Older versions were also unattractive to the eyes, while modern versions tend to be much more aesthetically pleasing to gaze upon, as the picture above indicates. Many contemporary sofa beds come with other pieces of matching furniture, such as chairs or coffee tables, taking the sleeper bed to another level. So, when you take a closer look, you can see that the sleeper bed has come a long way since its birth over a hundred years ago.

A Modern View

Modern day sofa beds are much lighter in weight and they open and close much easier than older models from decades ago. Contemporary ones also come in a wide variety of designs and styles and sizes, making it easier to fit well within the décor of a particular room or office. In fact, modern sleeper sofas come in many different colors and many different types of fabric or materials to cover the cushions, such as leather, cotton, wool, and the list goes on. They are the perfect choice for an office where one needs to maintain an atmosphere of professionalism and yet still have the option of sleeping at the office during those times when one has an important deadline to meet or when traveling might be a challenge because of foul weather.

A Peak at the Future

More and more companies are going Green as the global marketplace takes into account that natural resources are becoming more depleted and the environment as a whole is becoming more polluted. The need for recycling is more essential than ever, and the need for best practices is on the rise. Even big-box corporations are jumping onto the Green wagon to move things forward with a more eco-friendly approach to doing business, but it’s the smaller, local businesses that are leading the way to a more positive future where economics in conjunction with environmentalism is concerned. So, if you want to make a difference with your purchasing power, then consider supporting local businesses in the communities where you live and let them know that you share the same values that they do. Consider purchasing bedroom furniture from a company that has a vision for a future that features eco-friendly sofa beds.
