A Caribbean Island That’s Distinctly British
Posted: Sep 18, 2017
Barbados is an island in the Caribbean that offers an incredible coastline, plus a colonial heritage that has attracted World Heritage status. Here you can laze on white sandy beaches, or enjoy a traditional British afternoon tea in beautiful old colonial houses in its capital city of Bridgetown. Contact Brightsun Travel for a range of cheap tickets to Barbados so you can explore everything this unique island has to offer this holiday.
Cricket, Afternoon Tea & UNESCO Architecture
In the island’s beautiful capital of Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage city, you can explore historical buildings and breathtaking British colonial architecture. For avid cricket fans, Bridgetown’s famous Kensington Oval hosts regular cricket games, and the Cricket Legends of Barbados museum is a must see. Finish your day in Bridgetown by taking a traditional British afternoon tea overlooking the city’s impressive parliament buildings. Go slightly outside Bridgetown to explore the city’s Garrison, which is part of the World Heritage area, and home of the British command in the 1800s. The Garrison now hosts cricket matches and historical tours through its colonial buildings and network of underground tunnels.
- Little Bristol’ & 17th Century Estates
From Bridgetown you can explore the island’s incredible interior, and discover century old plantation houses backing onto huge sugar cane fields, and old towns with strong British connections. Visit the small town of Speightstown, known as ‘Little Bristol’, after the South Western British city, and experience a classical nautical vibe. Or, tour the island’s old stately homes for a taste of Victorian Britain's colonial legacy on the island. One of the highlights is St Nicholas Abbey, one of the oldest plantation houses on the island, with a fantastic museum and on site rum distillery to explore. Then there’s Farley Hill National Park, ruins of an old estate home, now home to a beautiful park. Finally, Sunbury Plantation House, built of stone shipped from Britain in the 1600s, is well worth a visit, offering tours around its well-preserved central rooms.
Gardens
Roam further into the island’s interior and you will find beautiful gardens revealing a very different side of the island to its pristine white coastlines, and gardens that would rival any entry at the Chelsea Flower Show. One of the island’s top-rated attractions, Hunte’s gardens, named after Anthony Hunte, a native Bajan from English ancestors, is one of many landscaped gardens that you can explore in Barbados. Or, visit the Flower forest, set on a former sugar estate, and you will find 20 acres of botanical gardens to explore, whilst in the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, one of the island’s original botanic gardens, you can admire a wide range of flowers and tropical plants.
