Wind turbines work in extremely challenging environments. They need reliable transmission of data signals and power from the stationary components in nacelle to rotating equipment in the hub. Due to its installation outside, it requires a waterproof assembly. It is important to ensure the safety of the system and prevent downtimes caused due to short circuits.

For a wind turbine, the slip ring assembly is made from solid metal using graphite or any other precious metal for brushes. These brushes touch the outside diameter of a rotating ring. An electrical current is conducted when the slip ring turns passing signals through brushes to the metal ring. However, you need exact components for availing these benefits of slip rings.

1. Check the Insulating Properties:The insulating properties should be carefully assessed when looking to buy slip rings and split rings for wind turbines. The insulation in the inner layers between wires, shells, and loops should also be checked. Always prefer buying the rings having higher insulating properties. This factor relies on the insulating material used in the ring. Ideally, it requires more than 1000 Megohms of insulation.

  1. Check the Anti-Interference Performance:A slip ring in a wind turbine is used to transfer a wide range of signals that include high voltage alternating current, high-frequency alternating current, weak DC small signals, and high current AC signals. The rings are placed closely in the assembly. This causes every type of interference in the transmission process. It results in distortions of the transferred data or information. In this regard, prefer the slip rings designed with electromagnetic shielding for general magnetic interferences and electric field shielding for electrical interference.
  2. Check the Contact Resistance:To buy slip rings and split rings for a wind turbine system, you should check the contact resistance between the brush/brush wires with the metal ring in the connection. If this resistance is very large, it can result in over currents affecting the slip ring performance. Also, it can influence the impact of information transmission process. Therefore, the contact material should be carefully assessed. Also, the metal ring surface should be smooth and free from any scratches.
  3. Prefer Metal Fiber Brushes:The metal fiber slip rings with thousands of hair-like silver alloy fibers on their tips are considered to be the best option in wind turbines. They offer improved performance as compared to carbon or carbon-metallic brushes used for data and current transfer. These brushes have a larger service life and higher current capacity. It can cause significant reduction in the electrical noise at higher sliding speed up to 70 meters per second. There are many advantages of using these brushes. Therefore, you should prefer slip rings with a metal fiber brush. Mostly, the slip rings are used on the fan in a wind turbine. In the smaller wind turbine, high-quality rings with lighter weight are preferred. The brushes in these rings may wear down or become clogged with debris over the time. Hence, you should always prefer best quality slip rings that need low maintenance.
