You can’t visit Harare without taking a side trip to the majestic Victoria Falls National Park on the Zambezi River, or "Mosi-oa-Tunya", the smoke that thunders. The park is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and a breathtaking site. The Falls are over a mile wide, spanning two countries, and are one of the world’s largest. To enjoy the Falls and the Zambezi River, you could take a leisurely boat cruise, or join a range of adventure tours, including white water rafting tours, or a late afternoon helicopter flight. You can also view the Falls from several walking trails, and at full moon you can access the park at night for a unique experience.

Hwange National Park is the largest National Park in Zimbabwe, and contains one of the largest populations of wild elephant, almost 45,000 in number, plus hundreds of species of mammals and an array of birds. In the park you will find large areas of Kalahari sands, woodlands, ancient lakes and open savannah grasslands that provide some of the best year-round wildlife viewing opportunities in the country. You’ll also find ancient archaeological sites and historic ruins to explore, plus hundreds of rock paintings dating back centuries. Bronze: Matobo National Park

Matobo National Park in southern Zimbabwe, a few hours drive or short 45 minute flight from the centre of Harare, is one of the oldest parks in Zimbabwe, and one of its most diverse. The park famously contains the Matopos Hills, composed entirely of granite, dating back over 2 billion years, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site owing to its distinct rock formations. The park also has the highest concentration of leopards in the world, making it one of the best places to spot some of Africa’s rarest mammals. Even though poaching has removed black rhino from most other parks in the country, you can still spot them in Matobo National Park.

When to go

December to March is Zimbabwe’s wet season, when lakes fill with water and grasslands are flooded, which attracts migratory birds from all over the world. June to November is the dry season when wildlife can easily be spotted at rare waterholes.
