What you need to know about thiru avinankudi temple, palani

Thiru Avinankudi temple is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga who is considered as the Lord of Kurinji (mountain). The temple got its name from the place it is situated whereas the shrine is called as Kulandai V?l?lyudhasw?mi Temple. It is believed as the earliest abode of Lord Muruga which began under the shade of ‘Nelli’ (Amla) Tree. This temple is about 200 meters from the foothill of main temple. It is one of the temples similar to Chozha architecture. There are also shrines for Vinagaya, Annamalaiyar, Unnamulai amman, Lord Shani, Dhakshinamoorthy in the temple complex. Milk is given as neivediyam after Balamurugan Abhisegam. It is believed that if somebody is yearning for a child they would receive one soon if they worship here.

The presiding deity is Lord Muruga as a child sitting on a peacock. The shrine is located at an elevation where the full view of the deity can be seen at a glance. Even the Nelli tree can be noticed beside the Lord clearly.

Renovation of the Temple

The temple was renovated lavishly between 1898 and 1910 by N. M. Subramanian Chettiar of Karaikudi and K.P.S. Palaniappa Chettiar of Kandanur, S.P. Ramanathan Chettiar and other members of the first donor’s family have added in 1968 a majestic R?ja Gopuram—one of Palani’s landmarks visible from the hill-temple. Since the late 1970’s, a few small shrines and an artistic Mandapam have been constructed, adding to the beauty of an already beautiful temple.

A Tank Named ‘Saravana Poigai’

There is a holy tank associated with the temple called as ‘Saravana Poigai’.Usually before visiting the main hill temple devotees visit here. Saravana Poigai is the name of a pool in the Himalayas, from whose waters the divine child, Saravana Poigai Muruga is believed to have emerged. Saravana Poigai pools in Lord Muruga shrines are sources of redemption. Accumulated sins are thought to be destroyed by a dip here. As fire consumes fuel, so too this sacred pool consumes the sins of the wicked. It is a tradition to bath at the pool before you enter the sanctorum. There is separate bath taps for both men and women.

Lot of marriages takes at this temple every year. The temple has got a peaceful atmosphere and is well maintained by the temple authorities.

It takes 2 minutes by car to travel from Palani to Tiru Avinankudi Temple. Approximate driving distance between Palani and Tiru Avinankudi Temple is 2 Kms.
