Amalfi is one of the most popular destinations on the entire coastal region - and it's no surprise. This beautiful town is not only located in the heart of a stunning region, but it also boasts a number of interesting attractions, both in the town itself and in the vicinity. If you are thinking of booking one of the beautiful Amalfi villas, here are some of the highlights not to miss.

Museo della Carta

This paper museum is housed in an old paper mill that dates back to the 13th century. The town has a long history of papermaking and you can find out all about it in this interesting site. It is the oldest paper mill in Europe, with the original paper presses still preserved and in working order. There is a guided tour in English, and you can learn about the original techniques that have been used over the years.

Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea

The cathedral is one of the main attractions of the town and is a popular highlight for visitors staying in the local Amalfi villas. It dates back to the 10th century, and you will be able to see features including the 13th century bell tower, the bronze doors from Syria, the Baroque interior and some 12th century mosaics.

While here, you should also visit the nearby Chiostro del Paradiso. These peaceful cloisters date back to the 13th century and are where the tombs of the important people of the town are kept. The elaborate arches and marble columns make an attractive sight, and the peaceful Mediterranean-style garden is pleasant for an afternoon stroll.

Grotta dello Smeraldo

This fascinating cave is located just a few kilometres away so is ideal for a short morning or afternoon trip. Inside the cave you will see beautiful stalactites hanging from the high ceiling, and large stalagmites rising up from the floor.

Valle delle Ferriere

For those staying in Amalfi villas that like the outdoors, a hike through this beautiful valley is highly recommended. It is not far from the town, and is easily reachable by bus. You can continue the hike all the way to Ravello if you are up for the challenge.

Arsenale della Repubblica

In this ancient shipyard you will discover the history pertaining to the region's presence as a powerful maritime republic. The elegant architecture is very well preserved, and you will be able to see a number of ancient nautical instruments that date back to the Middle Ages.
