What is Amalfi Famous For?
Posted: Mar 19, 2014
Amalfi is a very popular destination for tourists who travel Italy, attracting thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. There are many attractions in this beautiful region, and Amalfi villas are certainly becoming amongst the most popular in Italy. But just what is this town and region most famous for? Here are some of the things that it has made its name for over the years.
Beautiful Landscape & Architecture
Firstly, and most obviously, this region boasts some truly spectacular scenery - and it is this that is often the main draw for visitors. The dramatic coastal scenery complete with high cliffs, tiny beaches and picturesque towns and villages is one that you could spend many months exploring. In addition, the wonderful architecture is not only beautiful, but of great interest and significance to experts. These are just a few reasons why the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Maritime History
While quite a small town now, this was once a very powerful maritime centre back in the Middle Ages. The best place to get a sense of this history is the Arsenal of the Maritime Republic. This is a very well preserved area where warships used to be built and repaired. It was responsible for the construction of some of the biggest ships in the area at the time, and you can see the remains along with various models of ships and some ancient maritime artefacts in the small museum. The site also hosts art exhibitions throughout the year.
Limoncello
This lemon liqueur is popular throughout Italy, but it is especially popular in the Amalfi Coast region. It is made from 'sfusato' lemons, which are very long and large, and you will see them grown in terraced gardens throughout the area, especially from February to October. An evening limoncello on the patio is an absolute must-do when staying in any of the lovely Amalfi villas in the area.
Paper Making
The practice of papermaking has been important to this region for many centuries. When you stay in any of the local Amalfi villas, you can find out all about the history of this heritage at the excellent Museum of Handmade Paper. The museum is housed in an ancient paper mill that dates back to the Middle Ages - which was one of the first places in Europe to manufacture paper.
Famous Events
The town is also famous for a number of events that are held here each year. These include Saint Andrew's feast days in June and November, to celebrate the patron saint of the city; Byzantine New Year's Eve on August 31; and the Historical Regatta, a rowing competition that is held here once every four years.
Discover a Spectacular Region
Amalfi villas are popular with tourists throughout the year, but especially during the warm summer months. If you would like to discover more about the things the region is so famous for, start planning your stay – you won't regret it.
