Explore Vibrant Cities in the Indian Ocean
Posted: Oct 25, 2017
The Indian Ocean is a breath-taking part of the world, with exotic islands and tropical destinations fit for a beach holiday of a lifetime. But explore its ancient cities and bustling capitals and experience a more traditional, authentic way of life in the region. Brightsun Travel has cheap airfares to the Indian Ocean, flying direct from London, taking you into the region’s major urban centres.
Colombo, Sri Lanka
In Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city, you could marvel at historical buildings and modern architecture side by side, including old Buddhist temples and hospitals dating back to the 17th century, as well as the soon-to-be-opened Lotus Tower, set to be the tallest building in South Asia. Colombo also has a strong arts scene, with the Barefoot complex at the centre of it all, offering an art gallery, restaurant and retail outlet where you can buy a range of local textiles. Or, for shopping on a grander scale, you could head to the massive Pettah market and experience a melting pot of cultures.
Kandy, Sri Lanka
Arguably one of the most scenic rail journeys in South Asia is the journey from Colombo to Kandy, through Sri Lanka’s stunning interior, and past some of the finest tea plantations in the world. Kandy is a magical ancient city in Sri Lanka with UNESCO World Heritage status, and home to the Temple of the Tooth, an important marble temple housing a sacred Buddhist shrine. Kandy is also surrounded by mountains and rainforests, where you can take hiking and walking trails through magical scenery. It is also set on the Kandy Lake, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most picturesque cities.
Male, Maldives
Whilst most people travel to the beaches soon after they land in Male, the capital of the Maldives, it is a city worth exploring for its beautiful mosques, colourful buildings and bustling markets. You could start your tour of Male in the central Fish Market, the heart and soul of Male. Then onto its National Museum, which explores Maldivian history back to the 12th century. Finally, no tour of Male would be complete without a visit to the oldest mosque in the country, the Old Friday Mosque, dating back to the 17th century, and a beautiful building made of white coral.
Port Luis, Mauritius
Mauritius’ capital, Port Louis, offers traditional markets, beautiful mosques and a variety of museums to explore. The city is also an ideal location to experience some of the many culinary delights of Mauritius, in its many authentic restaurants and cafes. Mauritius is a melting pot of Indian, Chinese, French and Creole cooking and is known the world over for its heart-warming curries and incredible seafood. Here, you could also visit the pretty Blue Penny Museum and explore the history of the island. Or, head to the Central Market and get lost amongst hawkers and busy fruit and vegetable stalls.
