Getting to Know the Cinque Terre and Capri

There are few things that can obliterate stress and worry like a vacation in Italy. Probably the first Mediterranean country that comes to mind when you consider the perfect blend of culture, heritage, sunshine and relaxation, there really is nothing quite like a vacation in Italy. You could spend spend weeks just going from village to village all along the stretch of coastline exploring the seaside towns. With the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea as your backdrop, take advantage of the location and spend a few days walking between the villages of the Cinque Terre, or relax and soak up the sun on the Island of Capri.

Cinque Terre

Translated literally as "the Five Lands", the Cinque Terre is a group of five villages on the eastern coast of Italy in the province of Liguria. Cinque Terre is comprised of Monterossa al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, towns which all cling to the cliffs along a rugged coast. With a history that dates back to the 11th century, and a culture that boasts being the birthplace of pesto (among other things of course), it is no wonder that the five villages and the surrounding areas are protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One of the most delightful things to do while you are on a vacation in Italy in the area of Cinque Terre, is to travel between the villages on foot using the Sentiero Azzurro, or the "Light Blue Trail" that leads between them. Don't worry if you are not feeling up to walking all the way, there is also a train that can take you from one to the other, or you can skip directly to the stunning beaches of Riomaggiore at the far end of the trail.

The Stunning Island of Capri

Not quite located in the Mediterranean Sea, the stunning Island of Capri is actually situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just south of Naples. According to ancient history and geological evidence, Capri was once part of the mainland and has been inhabited since the earliest times. The island is a perfect place for a vacation in Italy, whether you are looking to stay right on the water or up on the picturesque higher parts of the island.

Separated into Capri and Anacapri, the amazingly blue waters that surround the island are warm and inviting. While you are on the island, be sure to take a trip around the coastline and into the Blue Grotto, which is one of the iconic symbols of Capri. When you head into the Blue Grotto by boat, it is pitch black, but when the boat turns around inside the cave, the sunlight reflecting off the white limestone floors shines upwards in a brilliant blue hue. You should also make sure you indulge in the fabulous seafood the island is so well known for - after all, you’re on holiday!
