Sardinia is an Italian island located in the Mediterranean Sea, and the second largest after Sicily. It is rife with beauty, culture, and history. Year after year, hordes of tourists visit the island for its many attractions, the most famous of which is its pristine beaches.

The island is abundant with fantastic resorts, and holidaymakers have various opportunities to try out the many different water sports and activities the island has to offer. But the summer sun is not the only reason travellers come to Sardinia: honeymoons, short getaways and family excursions all draw visitors from all over the world to this island gem. When visiting the island, for whatever reason, the following activities are must-try.

Windsurfing at Cagliari

Cagliari is the capital city of of the island. Due to its mild climate throughout the year, Cagliari is home to many parks (consisting of subtropical plants) and is considered one of the greenest cities in Italy. The city’s climate also makes the long stretch of beautiful beach, known as Poetto, even more captivating. The beach stretches for eight kilometres, which makes it an ideal venue for different water activities, including windsurfing. But Cagliari isn’t only for the adventurous. For instance, when newlyweds visit Sardinia, honeymoons take a more romantic turn when visiting Poetto - not only because of the many water activities to try by day, but also because of the lively nightlife and excellent ambience it offers visitors.

Sailing at Caprera

Caprera is another little island off the coast of Sardinia. It is a well-known tourist destination, due to the fact that politician Guiseppe Garibaldi retired here, but Caprera offers more than simply historical legacy. The tiny island is also home to one of the oldest sailing schools in Italy - the Centro Velico Caprera. Established in 1967, the school has instructed over 100,000 students since then. Sailing is a major part of Caprera, and locals take it very seriously. This, however, does not mean it can’t be a fun activity for any visitor who comes to Sardinia. Honeymoons or other special occasions are the perfect time to enjoy something new, like sailing – and what could be more romantic than sailing around the coastline at sunset with a loved one?

Diving at Alghero

Alghero is located in the province of Sassari. Apart from the main tourist attractions on land, which include its cathedrals and churches, Alghero also boasts a number of excellent beaches and caves. In fact, there are over 300 discovered caves just northwest of Alghero Bay, which visitors can explore via scuba-diving and cave-diving excursions. One of the most famous attractions in Alghero is Neptune’s Grotto, a stalactite cave discovered in the 18th century. There are two entrances to the cave: one is through a stairway that was cut in to the side of the cliff in the 1950s, and the other is via a short boat ride from the Alghero port. Either way, the effort is worth it - inside Neptune’s Grotto seems almost magical.
