A jigsaw is used to make straight or curved cuts in a variety of materials, including plywood, plastic, metal, particleboard, and many others products. It is safe and easy to use and is often used by beginners for cutting purposes.

Though the tool is extremely versatile, it is often underused. Typically it is not more used that carved cut.

A Jig Saw performs best in thinner materials like metal, wood, and laminate. Take a look and how easy it is to use a Jig Saw.

Here are some ways to make most out of a jigsaw.

Choosing the right blade

Not using the right wood-cutting blade is perhaps the most common mistake while using it. As jigsaw blades come in dozens of lengths, widths and tooth configurations, the chances of choosing a wrong blade are very high, especially for novice users.

Here users should remember two golden rules:

  1. Wider blades are appropriate for making long, straight cuts
  2. Narrow blades are good for cutting curves

Splinter-free cuts

Standard jigsaw contains blade, pointing upwards and all jig-saw cut on the upstroke. As a result, splintering arises at the top surface of the material which is being cut. Avoid it by simply turning over the workpiece.

Choosing blade for metal

It is rather easier as there are fewer metal blades. Metal cutting jigsaw blades are sharp, hard and cut through mild metals, like sheet metal, wood containing hinges, copper pipes, etc.

The choice of the correct blade depends on the thickness of metal. Choose a blade with more teeth for better results.

Cutting straight

Making a perfectly straight cut with a jigsaw is difficult but possible. The trick here is to steer the saw along the clamped down straightedge.

Cutting circles

The jigsaw can be ideally used for cutting perfect circles of any size. However, to make an accurate cut, use a circle-cutting jig. The jig consists of little more than a long, flat arm known as a beam which attaches to the saw. It also comprises an adjustable pivot point that represents the center of the circle.

You can always make more of this versatile tool with the tips mentioned above.
