Just as photography is writing with light, dancing is writing body moves with creative thinking. But one thing is clear through different rituals and traditions that dancing has undergone tremendous innovation since the day humans incepted it. Basic Differences between Modern and Contemporary Choreographers
When it comes to dancing, a lot has changed since 1950s when Bollywood stars would sing and dance around trees. And it would not require them too many efforts to create dance performances. The dance was simple as dancers would just require performing some cliché steps.
In the 70s and 80s, we saw a sudden change in the dancing performance as artists would now perform under lights on dance floors in hotels. In the early 1990s, choreographers in India developed Modern dance.
And it was a time when choreographers came out of the cocoon shell of classical ballets and created dance moves with their own techniques, costumes and shoes and much emphasis was given on creativity rather than continuing with the cliché dance moves of the 80s.
Earlier it was technical expertise that a choreographer would impart to a dancer. In the 90s, choreographers started thinking out of the box and came up some amazing creative dance steps that became a trend in the coming years.
Be it Mamta Kulkarni's bold dance moves in ‘Karan Arjun’ or Madhuri Dixit’s dance moves in ‘Khalnayak’ on lyrics like “Choli Kay peechay kya hay”, the dance started changing gradually. The contemporary choreographers have taken dance to a new level. The contemporary choreographers create steps using the emotions and mood of an artist which produces a more relaxed dance style.
The contemporary dance is actually a mix of a social, economic and political climate of the time rather than ethnic. There is a very less influence of ethnicity on the modern day dance moves. The dance moves contemporary choreographers teach to dancers in India these days seem more influenced by dance from western and African countries. Where it combines the postmodern dance techniques, modern and ballet steps, there it lays equal emphasis on artist’s creative abilities.
Who Become Choreographers?
Choreographers are professional dancers who have achieved a status in the industry through their hard work and creativity and now want to impart their skills to the newer breed of dancers in this country.
The job of choreography is like moving into a position in management rather than performing them. He or she assumes a complete controlling leadership role in all aspects of a dance production. The job of best contemporary choreographers is to oversee the dancers, musical selection, lighting and costuming of the production.
And this ability to come up with Best Contemporary Choreography is a strong pull. The best contemporary choreography demands hours of hard work for putting dance pieces together and by themselves playing roles in the story.
