Immerse Yourself in Mauritius’ Natural Beauty

Mauritius may be small but it's got landscapes that are awe inspiring. The island has a mountainous interior with ancient rainforests housing some of the world’s rarest wildlife, plus surrounding oceans where you can spot diverse marine life, and explore uninhabited islands dating back centuries. Brightsun Travel has exclusive holiday and hotel packages across the island, plus discount airfares to Mauritius all year round.

Wildlife

Mauritius is rich in wildlife, including dolphins, whales and sharks, and a range of critically endangered birds. Although famously the dodo disappeared here in the 17th century, Mauritius has saved more birds from extinction than any other country. Pink Pigeons and Mauritian Kestrels are increasing owing to the presence of important National Parks and Mauritius’ committed approach to conservation. Snorkelling and diving here are a must, as the island has shallow warm waters with coral reefs that are bursting with life. You can also spot giant tortoises and thousands of bat species.

The Black River Gorges National Park

The Black River National Park, granted protected status in 1994, is the biggest and most important park in Mauritius, and is at the centre of the country’s conservation efforts, protecting the island’s last remaining forests and many native species of wildlife. It is the best place to catch a glimpse of birds and wildlife, such as wild boar and deer, as well as the incredibly rare Mauritian Kestrel and the Pink Pigeon. The National Park also offers a variety of trekking routes and viewpoints with spectacular views of the forest and the Tamarin Falls.

The Blue Bay Marine Park

The Blue Bay Marine Park is a designated wetland of international importance, where development is kept to a minimum to allow for marine life to thrive. Consequently the park boasts a very important stretch of coral reef that provides sanctuary to a range of tropical fish. It is one of Mauritius’ best snorkelling spots, with ancient coral gardens and a wide variety of marine life. Here you can go on independent snorkelling trips, or take a glass bottom boat tour across the park. You could also visit the islet of Ile aux Deux Cocos, an important nature reserve covering 4 hectares.

The Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve

The Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve is a popular nature reserve on an island just off the coast of Mauritius, and a place where you can really get back to nature in Mauritius. You can only visit the island as part of a guided tour, which keeps visitor numbers to a minimum. A tour of the Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve offers the opportunity to encounter a true island wilderness, where giant tortoises roam free in their hundreds, and protected coastal forests contain rare birds, ebony trees and wild orchids. Here you can also spot sperm whales in surrounding oceans.

Rodrigues

The remote volcanic island of Rodrigues is located 600 kilometres northeast of Mauritius’ mainland and well worth a visit. Here you can experience what Mauritius would have looked like decades ago. This time-warped island has a small population of 40,000 people, and a slow pace of life. You could visit the François Leguat Reserve, where thousands of indigenous trees have been planted in recent years, and hundreds of tortoises have come out of fantastic breeding programmes. Or you could dive La Passe St François and spot unicorn fish, tuna and rays.
