Vaikunta Ekadasi is a very auspicious day observed by the devotees of Lord Vishnu. It is also known as Swarga Vathil Ekadasi and Mukkoti Ekadasi. Vaikunta Ekadasi falls on the Margazhi month-Tamil month which occurs between mid December to mid January in the English calendar. Observing fasting on Vaikunta Ekadasi is considered very auspicious, that relieves the observer from the cycle of birth and death by which the devotees attains the Mukti- Salvation.
Why Vaikunta Ekadasi Considered Very Special?
All Ekadasi days are considered auspicious but Vaikunta Ekadasi is more special than other Ekadasi’s because it is believed that on this day the Gate of heaven (Vaikunta Dwar) opens. And also, One who observe a Vrat on Vaikunta Ekadasi is equivalent to observing all 23 Ekadasi Vrat of the year.
Reason Behind Vaikunta Ekadasi
People across the world observe Vaikunta Ekadasi Vrat and keep awake at night by chanting mantras and performing bhajans. According to Padma Purana, Lord Vishnu fought with the Muran-Demon and in between he went to a cave to take rest and create a new weapon to kill the Demon Muran. While Lord Vishnu was sleeping, demon got inside the cave and tried to kill him. At that time, a female form of energy came out from Lord Vishnu and killed the Demon Muran. He was impresses by that female form and called her as Ekadasi. She asked him to grant Moksha to all those who observe Vrat on that day. Lord Vishnu happily obliged and gave her a requested boon and he told Ekadasi that if anyone worships him on this day, they will reach Vaikunta-heaven.
It is believed that this incident happened in the Margazhi month in Tamil calendar. Devotees of Lord Vishnu do not eat rice on Ekadasi day as Demon Muran is believed to be residing in Rice on Vaikunta Ekadasi day to find a way to enter Vaikunta.
Another version linked with Vaikunta Ekadasi is that Lord Krishna had the conversation with Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war which we all known as the Bhagavat Gita. It was on Vaikunta Ekadasi day that Arjuna attained the highest level of knowledge.
Spiritual Significance of Ekadasi
Every 11th day of fortnight in a lunar month is observed as Ekadasi. Every month has two Ekadasi’s, one is the bright one and other is a dark one. Observing fast on Ekadasi days will helps to attaining high level of enlightenment. By observing Vaikunta Ekadasi, the soul and spirit are in perfect alignment with planets. Most of the Yogis and devotees observed meditation on this auspicious day and its helps to improve the concentration power.
Rituals on Vaikunta Ekadasi
Vaikunta Ekadasi fasting starts from the previous night of Ekadasi. Those who plan to observe this Vrat skip the previous night’s dinner and fast the entire day of Vaikunta Ekadasi and keep chanting Lord Vishnu’s mantras or slokas or devotional songs. Some people observe long meditation. Those who observe Vrat on this day, visit the Vishnu temple on next day morning which completes their observance of Vaikunta Ekadasi. Special pujas and rituals are held in all Vishnu temples on this day. Offering Special rituals on Vaikunta Ekadasi gives plenty of blessings from Lord Vishnu.
