Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikunta Ekadasi is an important and auspicious festival, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It occurs during the Dhanur solar month in the Hindu Calendar. Dhanur month is known as Margazhi month in the Tamil calendar. It is believed that ‘Vaikuntha Dwaram’ or the gate to the heaven is opened on this day. As per the legends, it is believed that fasting on Vaikunta Ekadasi is equivalent to fasting on the remaining 23 Ekadashis in the Hindu Calendar.

Story Behind Vaikunta Ekadasi

The legend says that the Devas got so irritated with the attacks of the demon Muran. So they approached to Lord Shiva, who directed them to Lord Vishnu. A war ensued between Lord Vishnu and the demon Muran. Lord Vishnu realized that a new weapon was required to destroy Muran and that’s why he came to a cave for the Goddess named Haimavati in Bhadrikashrama. After that he create a new weapon to kill the demon Muran. While Lord Vishnu was taking rest, Muran tried to slay him, a female power that emerged from vishnu’s body and destroyed demon muran to ashes. Then Lord Vishnu named her Ekadasi and asked her to claim a boon. This day is celebrated as Vaikunta Ekadasi.

Significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikuntha is the abode place of Lord Vishnu. It was consider as the heaven. It is believed that, On the day of Ekadasi whoever dies naturally will reach heaven even if they are did a sin. If they die in other days, they will go to heaven or hell depending upon their sins and good deeds. So this festival is grandly celebrated in many places. Devotees wake up early in the morning and offering special prayers to Lord Vishnu. Some people chanting Vishnu mantras and perform a puja in Vishnu Temples on that auspicious day of Vaikunta Ekadasi. Many devotees observe fasting and stay awake on Whole night on that auspicious day of Vaikunta Ekadasi to attain salvation in Lord Vishnu’s feet.
