Most of the electric motors in industrial and commercial sectors use belt drives. Belt drives offer flexibility in positioning of the motor relative to the load. The speed of the driven equipment can be increased or decreased by using pulleys of varying diameters. There are a variety of rubber belts used in belted drive systems. Cogged belts are used in systems that have at least one small pulley. In this article I will give you 5 benefits of using industrial cogged belts :

  1. Cogged belt systems are 98% efficient whereas V belt systems have only 95% efficiency. Cogged belts have slots which run perpendicular to belts length and help to reduce the bending resistance of the belt. Even if cogged belts use the same pulley as V-belts it manages to run cooler, lasts longer, and increase efficiency by 2% as compared to standard v-belts.

  1. Cogged belts offer less slippage at high torque. V belts have a peak efficiency of 95% to 98% at the time of installation but this efficiency deteriorates to a nominal efficiency of 93% when slippage occurs because the belt is periodically not retensioned. When V belts are replaced with cog belts, motor load reductions of 2 to 10% have been observed.

  1. Cogged belts provide better and relatively more consistent efficiency over a variety of loads than other belt types. Standard V belts generally stretch, slip, bend and compress which cause loss of efficiency. Cogged belt manufacturers claim that replacing V belts with cogged belts save energy as well as money.

  1. Cogged belts are able to run in wet and oily environments. Synchronous belts are not suitable for shock loads and transfer vibrations hence cogged belts are used when there is need of vibration damping or when shock loads cause abrupt torque changes that could shear synchronous belt teeth.

  1. Cogged belts are used especially in the drive system of rooftop air conditioners, poultry fans, and laundry machines. Cogged belts are ideal for these systems because the pulley attached to drum or fan has a diameter of fewer than two inches. For pulley of that small size, the belt should be able to make a pretty sharp bend to fit perfectly around it. If we use V belt instead of cogged belts it will generate a lot of heat and can deteriorate the belt very quickly. Cogged belts are preferred for their ability to allow heat dissipation and offering better contact with the pulley.

PolyDrive is the leading industrial belt manufacturer that got established in 1972. Polydrive is widely respected in the field of industrial rubber belts because of their consistency in providing fine quality products over the years.
