Munnar is constantly synonymous to tea estate. An outing to Munnar will be incomplete without having a visit to these tea estates. Munnar is a place known for its lovely tea cultivation and tea estates. Nobody will return home without tasting or shopping the Munnar tea.

Tea is the widely used bevarage in the entire world. The tea plant, Camellia Sansis, is a cultivated tree that has its inceptions between India and China. There are three different of the tea plant China, Assam, and Cambodia ­ and number of hybrids. The China variety develops at a height of nine feet. It is a strong plant ready to withstand icy winters and has a economic existence of no less than 100 years.

John Daniel Munro was the man who developed tea estates at Munnar in 1879. He saw Kanan Devan hills during his visit in 1857. He realized it as the best place to start plantations. Daniel approached the Poonjar royal family to lend land for him and he was succeeded in persuading Raja. Then he formed North Travancore Land Planting & Agricultural Society. The members in the society started cultivation on coffee, cardomom and other spices.. Later all these crops were abandoned and they began to concentrate only upon tea plantations. A W Turnor was the man who started plantation in Munnar. A H Sharp, a European planter in 188, started tea cultivation in the 50 acres of land. Now the land belongs to the Seven Mallay Estate. There was another twist in 1895, that Finley Muir and his Company bought 33 estates in Munnar. These estates were later managed by Kanan Devan Hills Plantation Company, which was formed in 1897. Tata­Finley group and Tata Tea Ltd was formed in 1983 by merging Finley with tata group.

It was in the year 2005 that Kanan Devan Hill Plantations Company Pvt Ltd was formed and Tata Tea transferred all its rights and documents to the company. Thus started the history of tea in Munnar and today the company is the largest tea corporate in South India having an annual production of around 21 million kg of tea. Along with tea cultivation, they are also providing spices, hand made chocos, coffees etc.
