Why School Curricula Should Include Robotics
Posted: Jan 20, 2018
Robot kits for kids may sound like something from a sci-fi novel, but they’re very real. Not only that, they can help with child education and development in astonishing ways.
To be successful in their lives, school kids need to learn about technology. Robotics is an especially important field to understand early on. Unfortunately, too many schools fail to recognize or address this growing need.
All over the world, countries have begun making robotics a compulsory part of school curricula. Children are starting to learn about robots as early as preschool and Kindergarten. Still, much more needs to be done.
What is Robotics?
To understand why kids should learn about robotics, it’s important to define what a robot is.
Basically, a robot is mechanical device which can follow a set of instructions without remote control. Its parts include:
- A central processing unit (CPU)
- A motor or motors
- Actuators which let it move its limbs
- Sensors which let it perceive its environment
A robot might communicate by speaking or just by making sounds and flashing lights. It all depends on its programming.
Why Should Kids Learn About Robotics?
Substantial anecdotal evidence supports the idea that children benefit from learning about robotics. Robot kits for kids help make students more curious and independent.
Here are a few reasons why kids should learn about robots:
1. Robots Make Learning Fun
Robotics gives kids an easy on-ramp for learning about IT, programming and other fields. There are currently robot-building competitions for a variety of age groups. These can sharpen kids’ teamwork, critical thinking and creative skills as well as their competitive instincts.
2. Robotics Gives Kids Experience and Empowerment
When kids learn how to build robots, they get to put their education to work. Robotics lets boys and girls apply math and science lessons in the real world. They can learn the pride of making something that works, which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
3. Robots Prepare Kids for the Workforce
Robotics has drastically altered the job market. Supermarkets and gas stations are becoming automated. Robots have started doing everything from serving ice cream to assisting with surgeries. Developers have even begun working on robots which can diagnose illnesses and ailments faster than human doctors can.
Learning about robotics at a young age can give kids a leg up in the evolving workforce. They will become aware of the technology around them and how to use it for their own ends.
Should All Kids Learn About Robotics?
Will all kids work in robotics when they grow up? Of course not. Still, kids and parents can’t afford to ignore the impact that robots and other technology has upon our everyday lives. Including robotics in their curriculums, schools can better prepare children for adulthood.
