Health and Safety at work continues to be a challenge across the globe. Likewise, occupational health and safety is a burden for both employers and the wider economy and can result in staff absence. With the growing number of work-related injuries and diseases worldwide, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed a new standard ISO 45001 to create a standardised way to manage occupational health and safety at the workplace. Publication of the final standard has been announced as the 12th March 2018

The proposed ISO 45001:2018 certification is potentially one of the most important national voluntary occupational health and safety consents to be implemented at any time. The ISO 45001:2018 Certification has the potential to move safety and health management forward on both a global level and in a country-by-country basis.

The aim of the new standard ISO 45001 is to:

  • Support organisations all over the world in providing a safe and healthy workplace for workers and other people;
  • Prevent deaths, work-related injury and ill-health; and
  • Continually improve health and safety standards through the reduction of risks.

As with many other international standards, ISO 45001:2018 is intended to be applicable to an organisation of any size, regardless of the industry in which it operates. The standard can be used by small low risk operations as well as by high risk and large complex organizations.

The ISO 45001:2018 Certification provides an effective system to help companies comply with occupational health and safety regulations. Implementation of an ISO 45001-compliant system is expected to help reduce disruption in company operations as the result of time losses related to occupational health and safety incidents.
