Golf is arguably the greatest game in the world, and it certainly is as far as golfers are concerned. Dedicated golfers spend as much of their free time as possible out on the course, come rain, hail, or shine, and are always seeking to improve their handicap. Some golfers prefer to spend all their time at their own club, but there are many who would like the opportunity to meet new friends and play on other courses.

However, finding new golf partners, societies, and groups in your area is not always easy which is why online golf clubs have come to the fore in recent years. Becoming a member of one of these online clubs gives you a host of advantages, not the least of which is being able to play at different courses in your area, and even courses around the world, at discounted rates on green fees.

Most online golf societies have a search menu which enables you to book a game online. This means that you can plan when to play, where to play, and who to play with. If your usual buddies are not available when you want to play you will be able to meet up with someone new. Few golfers like to play alone and by being a member of an online club you will very quickly find a playing partner. It could be the start of a great friendship, as many new friendships are made on the golf course.

The Many Benefits Of A Round Of Golf

There are many benefits to a round of golf, not the least of which is the exercise. A full 18 holes means you will walk between five and six miles while the golf swing itself is great exercise for the arms, legs, back and abdomen: the more of a novice you are, the more exercise of that sort you will get! Even if you only play nine holes you will still burn more calories than you would with a full workout at the gym, and it’s a lot more fun too.

Of course, just being out in the fresh air is good for relieving stress and getting away from the hassle of day to day life, and the amount of concentration that you have to put in is both mentally stimulating and makes you leave any problems behind you. You can’t be worrying about work when you are trying to get out of a bunker, or ensure your ball doesn’t finish up in the lake.

Then of course, there is all of the socialising that goes on in the clubhouse after a round. Golf used to be thought of as a sport for the elite and upper class members of society but that is by no means the case today. You meet people from all walks of life and a wide variety of backgrounds, from directors of large companies to farmworkers and bus drivers. Indeed, many of the farmworkers and bus drivers are better players than the company directors.

Once you start playing golf you will wonder why you never started playing before. The Scottish actor Ewan McGregor once said "I started watching golf for the first time yesterday. I’m really worried about myself. I was actually enjoying it!" He is so right – playing golf is not only great fun, but every time you step out on to the course you have that desperate desire to get round in just one shot less than the last time you played.

Online golf club membership means that you will have access to other courses throughout the UK, and some of the clubs have several thousand members. If you are new to the sport or a novice player you would do well to book a few lessons with your local club professional to get you off on the right foot. Some of the online golf clubs charge an annual fee, but you can join some of them for free. You will become part of a bunch of friendly like-minded golfers who want to have fun and you’ll find that there is an easy, laid-back, informal attitude.

The Social Golfer is an online golf club which describes itself as a "real" social network where you actually leave your PC and get out and meet people and, of course, play more golf! Membership is free, and you will be able to play on courses all over London and the Home Counties, together with other courses around the UK.
