Most of us imagine men with baldhead if it comes to hair loss or baldness. Being a woman and dealing hair loss is more difficult. Baldness or thin hair is more annoying for women, but in many cases, it is treatable.

Studies in the United States of America show that 40 percent of women suffer baldness in all. The North American Academy of Dermatology states that 50 percent of women by the age of 50years suffer baldness or thin hair. Earlier, baldness was treated as a problem related to beauty and does not require any medical treatment.

Nowadays, hair loss and baldness are treated by means of sophisticated medicines and methods of surgeries. Baldness causes social embarrassment and lowers confidence levels among women when compared to men.

Factors that cause hair loss among women

  • Iron flats useful for hair straightening, coloring, and other grooming techniques may lead to hair loss among many women.
  • Hormones like dihydrotestosterone cause Androgenetic alopecia or baldness. This problem is commonly seen among men but women that have reached menopause may suffer this type of issues as women may suffer hormonal imbalances after menopause. Consuming oral contraceptives also cause baldness among women.
  • Progestin implants or hormonal implants or patches may cause baldness among women. So, doctors suggest nonhormonal birth control measures to avoid hair loss due to birth control methods. Oral contraceptives with lower-androgen index are suggestible for women to prevent hair loss among women.
  • Stress due to surgery, child birth, disease, lack of proper diet may lead to effluvium or loss of hair in handfuls.
  • Women who suffer loneliness due to divorce or death of the spouse may experience more hairloss when compared to happily married women.
  • Chemotherapy may hurt hair follicles and cause hair loss in patches. Sometimes, it causes complete hair loss.
  • In cases of hair loss like alopecia areata, blood cells produce antibodies to hair follicles and cause hair loss in patches.
  • Pulling hair for styling or hairstyles like braids or corn rows may lead to thinning of hair.

Treatments for hair loss

  • Some of the treatments to control hair loss are using testosterone -blocking drugs.
  • Use of drugs like Eulexine or Aldactone is generally suggested by doctors to treat hair fall issues among women who are at the menopause stage.
  • Rogaine or topical minoxidil is useful for hair regrowth.
  • Treating diseases like inflammatory disorders may help the reversal of hair loss. Issues like inflammatory diseases are some of the causes for hair fall.
  • Topical cortisone in the form of injections helps to treat hair loss and baldness.
  • Laser therapy helps the healthy regrowth of hair. This is done by low -level laser rays. But the effectiveness of this therapy is not proved to date.

Surgical restoration of hair is a good method for women. In this method, existing scalp hair will be moved to thin slots to make the hair look thicker as usual. As women have less bald area than men, this method is productive for women to make their hair look thicker and fuller.

Dr. James S. Pendergraft opened the Orlando Women's Center in March 1996 to provide a full range of health care for women.
