Sicily’s almost eternal sunshine makes it the perfect year-round destination, not only because of its sparkling beaches and warm sea, but most especially because of its beautiful towns, where so much more can be explored and discovered. Here are some of the best cities to visit on the private guided tours of Sicily:

  • Catania – Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, Catania sits right at the foot of Mount Etna. Much of its old town got wiped out by the historic 1669 volcanic eruption and although it took some time to rebuild the city, it is once more in bloom, complete with beautiful piazzas, cathedrals, and everything you could expect from an Italian city.
  • Palermo – The island capital of Palermo boasts an entire range of grand sites, all worth exploring, from the Palermo Cathedral to Palazzo dei Normanni, Palazzo Abatellis, and the many city galleries. Museo Archeologico Regionale is an absolute along with the Catacombs and the botanic gardens. Palermo is also known for its distinct street food culture as well as its impeccable cafes and restaurants.
  • Syracuse – Siracuse or Siracusa teams with many relics from the past, starting from the Greek Theater (the biggest of its kind that the Greeks ever erected) to the Fountain of Arethusa and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Other sites worth visiting include Castello Maniace and the beautiful palazzos all across town.
  • Taormina – A picture-perfect town sitting on a rocky hillside, Taormina is well worth a visit for its rich historical heritage. The hilly town is dominated by a lavish landscape, serving backdrop to the ancient amphitheater for which Taormina is most famous.
  • Argigento – You can never get enough Greek ruins in Sicily, especially in the town of Argigento, where some of the most amazing temple relics remain standing, such as the temples of Hephaestus, Juno, Asclepius, and Heracles. While some were used as quarries, most still stand in good condition, reflecting the richness of the town’s past.
  • Messina – Coming from mainland Italy, you’ll probably enter Sicily through Messina. This beautiful town is characterized by its huge trees and olive and lemon groves, botanical gardens, and the scenic Porta Grazia. It is also in Messina that the splendid Church of Annunziata stands.
  • Cefalu – One of the most popular tourist draws in Sicily, Cefalu is home to must see landmarks like the Roman Baths and the Ancient Cathedral, with its main feature, Christus Pantokrator or the Fresco of Christ.
